INTRODUCTION

In the midst of the greatest missionary movement and the most extensive prayer movement of all time, we are now getting reports that the fires of revival are burning brightly in many parts of the world. It is a revival that carries with it all of the earmarks of every major revival movement of the past.

It is only in its beginning stages and some are even reluctant to call it a revival yet, but all are agreed that something significant is happening. This should not come as a surprise, since we have all been praying for years for just what we are seeing come to pass in these wonderful and exciting days.

Every widespread move of God throughout history has been challenged by the same people who found themselves being challenged in some previous move of God. Jesus himself said, "And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is better."' To the religious mind, change is the most painful prospect imaginable.

He is a rare individual who can make the journey through two major moves of God. And he who has remained pliable enough to go through three moves of God is almost non-existent.

We have a strong tendency to scrutinize, organize, polarize, and fossilize everything that moves in the Kingdom of God. We have to define it, measure it, structure it, wrap it up neatly and put a handle on it so that eventually we can put our name brand on it, start a franchise and merchandise it.

Of course, if it doesn't fit into our theology or our understanding of church policy or etiquette, or propriety, we usually throw it all out the door or we just ignore it.

If you are not really thirsty, you will probably not get through even the first chapter of this little book. But if you want a new, fresh touch from the Lord and you have a longing to see Jesus and touch him, something in the first chapter will call you on to read through the entire book and by the time you have finished it, you will have received a fresh new anointing from God and you will become a carrier of the fire that is beginning to burn in every country on earth.

This is what I pray will happen. God bless you and fill you with the fire of heaven!

Note: The very first person to read through this manuscript began to weep and to cry out to God for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit before he was half way through it. The Lord fully met him and he received a glorious anointing of joy. May the Lord do the same in your life!

PREFACE

A DEFINITION OF THE WORD "REVIVAL"
(in the biblical and historical sense)

The word "revival" is not found in the Bible. The words "revive, revived, and reviving" are. The Hebrew word that we translate into the English word "revive" is "chayah" and carries the meaning: "to live; to make or keep alive; preserve alive; quicken, recover, repair, restore." (Strong's Concordance)

The word "revive" is used only twice in the New Testament and is found in Romans 7:9 and 14:9 (see below). The Greek word for "revive" is "anadzao" which means "to recover life; be alive again." (Strong's Concordance)

There is one other word in the Greek that is translated in Acts 3:19 as "refreshing" and that word is "anapsuxis" which means "a recovery of breath; i.e., revival." This is the only verse in the New Testament that contains a Greek word which could correctly be translated "revival" (see verse below).

In order that we may get a clear idea of what the word "revival" means, I am including all the Old and New Testament references (there are not very many).

New Testament:

"Repent therefore and return, that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord...." (Acts 3:19; NAS)

"I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died." (Rom. 7:9; KJV)

"For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived...." (Rom. 14:9; KJV)

Old Testament:

"Can they revive the stones from the dusty rubble even the burned ones?" (Neh. 4:2; NAS)

"Wilt thou not Thyself revive us again, that thy people may rejoice in Thee?" (Psa. 85:6; NAS)

"Though I walk in the midst of trouble, Thou wilt revive me."
(Psa. 138:7' NAS)

"I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite." (Is. 57:15; NAS)

"Come, let us return to the Lord. For he has torn us, but he will heal us; He has wounded us, but he will bandage us. He will revive us after two days; He will raise us up on the third day that we may live before him." (Hosea 6:1-2 NAS)

"O Lord, revive thy work in the midst of the years...."
(Hab. 3:2; NAS)

The literal meaning of the word revival, if we are seeking a true biblical meaning, is a renewing and refreshing sent from the presence of the Lord in response to prayer, faith and repentance.

A revival does not have to be widespread to be called a revival in the biblical sense. One person can have a revival by receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit or by receiving a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit. When one person who has been lukewarm in his walk with the Lord returns to God in brokenness and repentance, this is revival in the biblical sense, but not in the historical sense.

This means that an outpouring of the Holy Spirit anywhere can be called a revival in the biblical sense. If it should continue to grow and leap over the walls and start to go far and wide, such as happened at the tiny Azusa Street church in Los Angeles at the turn of the century or in Wales at about the same time or in 1994 at the Airport Vineyard in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, it might become a revival in the historical sense.

It is only when a personal revival becomes a church revival and a church revival becomes a wide-spread revival and the wide-spread revival begins to impact society that historians begin to put the term "revival" on it. The things that historians look for before they will say that it is a true revival are:

* Large numbers of new converts.

* All of the signs of revival mentioned in chapter four of this book.

* Social conditions begin to change because of the new moral climate of righteousness.

The church has used the term "revival" to describe widespread and unusually powerful visitations of God that bring us closer to him. We must not quarrel with each other over terms. Since some are hesitant to call the present move of God a "Revival," I felt it would be helpful to look at the meaning of the word from a scriptural and a historical standpoint. Call it whatever you want to; a rose by any other name is still a rose. So far as I am concerned, we are witnessing the beginnings of a true revival in every sense of the word. Time will tell.

CHAPTER ONE

A REVIVAL OF JOY

A wave of spiritual life and refreshing is beginning to be felt throughout the body of Christ. Here are some of the reports we are receiving:

"REVIVAL PHENOMENA SPREADS AROUND THE ~WORLD...across America, Argentina, Canada, Britain, and other nations, a phenomenal awakening has begun with extraordinary manifestations including spiritual laughter, drunkenness, trances and falling to the floor. In addition to these sensational phenomena, many have reported mass conversions marked by repentance, emotional and physical healing and "warm feelings of love and peace." Similar manifestations have accompanied most of the major revivals during the past two centuries, including the Wesleyan, Holiness and Pentecostal movements" - Vinson Synan, AD 2000 Tlmelines,
Aug. 1994.

BILLY GRAHAM SPEAKS OUT ON REVIVAL

"During the North American Conference for Itinerant Evangelists in Louisville, KY., in July l994, Billy Graham said he believes the United States is positioned at the center of a sweeping spiritual revival.

"'Seldom has the soil of the human heart and mind been better prepared than today,'" the 75-year-old evangelist announced. I have never seen so many people come to salvation in such a short period of time."' (Charisma Magazine, October 1994)

HOLY LAUGHTER SPREADS ACROSS ENGLAND

"This laughing revival is now effecting churches all over Britain. 'Holy Laughter,' as some have called it, has swept British churches since May 1994. Church leaders there are calling it 'a season of refreshing from God.' Several daily newspapers are covering the revival; Time Magazine reported in August on how the movement has impacted Great Britain's Anglican congregations, and the laughter continues to spread like wildfire across England.

"'This could be the biggest thing to hit the church in my life-time,' said Gerald Coates, who leads the Pioneer network of charismatic churches in England. It's not going to go away,' he told Charisma Magazine.

"Earlier this year, Coates and fellow leaders noticed limited incidents of people laughing and crying uncontrollably, or falling on the floor as if overcome by God's power.

"'It's not new,' said Coates of the unusual manifestations.

But before, it tended to be infrequent or related to some

"Coates was soon aware that a pattern was developing. He learned of churches in which people were laughing and collapsing to the floor--'going down in droves,' as he put it.

"Without him referring to the phenomenon from the pulpit, the laughter broke out at his own church, Pioneer People, in southwest London. 'We saw it happening throughout the month of May,' said Coates, who also is a leader in the March for Jesus organization.

"According to Coates, congregations have been transformed since the movement began. In his own church there has been 'a new spirit' and a fresh generosity among members. Stories of changed lives pour into his office daily. 'It's a different church,' he said.

"The radical transformation of lives is also one of the hallmarks of a similar movement occurring in the New Frontiers stream of charismatic churches, led by Terry Virgo.

"'We're seeing healed marriages and people's whole attitudes being changed,' said Nigel Ring, who is a member of Virgo's team in Great Britain. 'There is also a tremendous openness between different church streams and denominations.'

"Ring said his church is making room in its meetings to let the Holy Spirit have His way. He confirmed that laughter is the most widely reported sign accompanying these visitations. 'At our Bible week, it's something we're seeing now in greater measure,' he said.

"Some British Christians have observed how fitting it is that in a stressed filled world, God is causing people to laugh. But the present move of the Spirit is more than just a comforting experience, the leaders say.

"'People are moving in far greater spiritual power,' said Ring. 'Previously difficult counseling situations may be resolved within minutes instead of months.'

"In addition, leaders of noncharismatic churches are accepting the experience. 'They're just coming and saying, "Something is happening--I just want to receive,"' said Ring.

Mark Elsdon Dew, communications director of Holy Trinity Brompton, a flourishing charismatic Anglican church in central London, said, 'The Holy Spirit has been moving in churches all over the place. We know now of probably more than 100 churches around the country where the Spirit has broken out in great power.' The effect on HTB has been extraordinary, according to their spokesman, who says everyone involved has a story to tell.

"Both Nigel Ring and Gerald Coates see Great Britain as part of a worldwide renewal movement. New Frontiers has received reports of spiritual visitations in a number of countries.

"'I have never ever seen anything sweep the country so quickly,' said Coates. 'The fact is, God has come to visit us. There's a depth and intensity about it that we haven't seen before."' - Clive Price in West Sussex, Great Britain, Charisma Magazine,
August 1994.

MARRIAGES HEALED

"Pastor Gary Eberts of Midwest Christian Center, Tinley Park, Illinois, says that after a month of meetings with Rodney Howard Brown, hundreds of water baptisms were performed for new converts and that so many marriages were healed that 'our counseling has virtually disappeared.' He describes the revival as, 'revolutionary, to put it mildly' with some participants collapsing on the floor and remaining for hours. In one case, he said, cleaners the next morning had to vacuum around some who had lain on the floor all night long.

CHURCHES REVITALIZED

"Well known theologian Peter Wagner of Fuller Theological Seminary, who himself was overtaken by holy laughter, says that the current events may be 'part of the things the Lord is doing to prepare us for a coming revival.' Many pastors claim that this outpouring has totally revitalized their churches." - Vinson Synan, AD 2000, Timelines, Aug. 1994.

A MODERN AZUSA STREET?

John Arnott, pastor of Airport Vineyard in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, reports that they are having services six nights a week. People are coming to this church from all over the world to see what's going on. Some of the manifestations are: falling, weeping, laughing, shaking, trembling, jerking, dancing, shouting, and an awesome sense of God's presence. Deep inner healings of emotions that have persisted for years and that nothing could touch, have been healed. People are being saved, healed, delivered from oppression, and filled with the Holy Spirit in an unprecedented way and the fire is spreading.

For the first several months at Airport Vineyard, there were a few people getting saved, but now (8 months after the initial outpouring) they are averaging 50 new converts each week.

A STORM OF GLORY

"The rain is falling. If you've been in many Holy-Spirit-led meetings lately, you've probably experienced it yourself. If you haven't...you will. I have no doubt about it. For these outbreaks of Holy Ghost power are not just isolated incidents. The reports are coming in from every quarter. The glory is here! God is manifesting His divine presence among His people. These

"Both Nigel Ring and Gerald Coates see Great Britain as part of a worldwide renewal movement. New Frontiers has received reports of spiritual visitations in a number of countries.

"'I have never ever seen anything sweep the country so quickly,' said Coates. 'The fact is, are no minor 'showers of blessing, either. They are the first waves of the great and final outpouring of the glory of God upon this earth. The former and latter rain of the Holy Spirit has begun to flood this planet like never before in history. THE FIRST WAVES OF GOD'S GLORY HAVE BEGUN TO FILL THE EARTH..." - Kenneth Copeland, Believer's Voice of Victory, June 1994.

DRUNK ON NEW WINE

"We have been tasting the New Wine of the Holy Spirit. Our introduction came via, 'Let The Fire Fall' conference at the Anaheim Vineyard. We have tasted enough to recognize how much old wineskin remains and can confirm the word of Jesus in Luke 5:39, 'And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, 'The old is better."' Laughing, crying, shaking, rolling, overpowering, are all accurate descriptions of people under the influence of new wine. One individual in our office sporadically flopped over on their desk in a semiconscious stupor throughout the day. We refuse to mention any names to protect the only remaining semblance of sanity! New wine has prompted us to take a fresh look at the model church. When God moves, invariably our theology and tradition are almost universally challenged. This move of the Spirit may contain the greatest challenges ever, or certainly produce the greatest controversy ever. Only God can reveal how much Pharisee lurks beneath the surface of each saint. It appears the screening process has begun!" - Al Houghton, Word at Work Ministries, August 1994.

REVIVAL COMES TO ST. LOUIS

"Our church, Life Christian Center, pastored by Rev. Rick Shelton, has had a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit's Revival Fire! We have just finished a four-week revival with Evangelist Rodney Howard-Brown from South Africa. Our entire Metropolitan area has been impacted. In one service there were 295 churches represented and many pastors came from all over the United States and several foreign countries. Four hundred ministers attended a special luncheon.

SOME OF THE MANIFESTATIONS WERE:

* Hundreds of people were falling to the floor as hands were laid upon them--some lay on the floor for hours.

* Some so drunk in the Holy Spirit they had to be helped or carried to their cars!

* Some were struck speechless for hours and a few for days.

* A few were frozen in one position--for long periods of time.
* Holy laughter would break out throughout the congregation.

*** The greatest testimony of all is that hundreds of people tell of their total lives having been changed by their encounter with the Lord.

Many skeptics came to check it out and went away touched by the Lord. One such friend was 'slain in the spirit' and couldn't speak for two and one-half days. Pastor Shelton and others tried to give testimonies and were struck dumb before the congregation...unable to speak.

At the end of the third week, they baptized 1,150 people in a swimming pool put up in the church. Thousands were coming from everywhere...lining up at the door as early as 4 PM to get a seat for the 7 PM service.

Many are telling how the Lord is using them with their families, in their neighborhoods, on the job, in school, etc. Ministers throughout the area report that the Holy Spirit is moving in the same way in their churches and wherever they speak. Ruth just finished a women's week-end Retreat and the Spirit broke out there! I cannot tell you of all the wonderful things the Lord is doing...except to say, this is the REAL THING!" - Hobart vann, Missionary Evangelist, Spring 1994.

(The following excerpt is from Hobart Vann's next prayer letter three months or so later.)

A SPIRITUAL EXPLOSION

"We have all prayed for years, 'Lord, send Revival.' HE HAS!! We are receiving reports from all over the world. Ruth and I just returned from Rodney Howard-Brown's camp meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. It was a spiritual explosion. One atheist was quoted as saying, 'I always thought that if there was a God, people would act just like this."' (Hobart Vann, Missionary Evangelist, Summer 1994)

From the above reports and testimonies, it is clear that a fresh wind of revival is blowing, not only across our land, but throughout the world!

Let us not be as the man in the following incident who was a witness to a mighty visitation of God, but who, because of his unbelief, did not partake of its benefits:

The ancient city of Samaria was under siege of a vast army of Arameans. It lasted so long that a donkey's head sold for about 2 pounds of silver and a few seed pods for an outrageous amount. Food was so scarce that the people had begun to eat their own children.

Then the word of the Lord came to the prophet Elisha, "Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says, about this time tomorrow a seah of flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria" (very cheap food). The officer on whose hand the king was leaning said to the man of God, "Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?"

"You will see it with your eyes," answered Elisha, "but you will not eat any of it!"

At the gate of the city sat four leprous men. They said to each other, "Why sit we here until we die? If we go inside the city, the famine is there and we will die there. If we stay here, we're going to die. Let's go over into the camp of the enemy and surrender. If they spare our lives, we'll live; if they kill us, we're going to die anyway."

So just before dark, these four lepers got up and walked out toward the camp of the Arameans. As they walked, God caused the noise of a mighty army to sound in the ears of the Arameans. thinking that the king of Israel had hired the Egyptian and Hittite armies to attack them, they fled, leaving everything behind.

When the four lepers reached the camp, they found plenty of food and provisions, but no people. They carried that news back to Samaria and the next day food was so plentiful and the crush of the people caused the death of the officer who had doubted the word of the Lord through Elisha the day before. He saw it with his eyes, but he did not eat of it.

CHAPTER TWO

THE REVIVAL TOUCHES ME

It had been almost a year since I first came in contact with this laughing revival. My first reaction was one of revulsion. "Ugh! This is not of God. This is pure flesh!" was my response. I promptly canceled it out of my thoughts.

As the months passed by and I began to hear of what God was doing in these kinds of meetings, I began to reevaluate my thinking on the matter. They say that a hungry heart will open a closed mind and my mind began to open ever so slowly. The more I heard and read and thought about these "strange" manifestations, and the wonderful healings and deliverances that were taking place, the more interested I became.

I remembered what I had read about other revivals down through the history of the church. In all of them there had been similar manifestations that had been a "stone of stumbling" to those on the outside looking in. In the Azusa Street meetings it had been speaking in tongues that some just could not swallow and so they took a look and walked away&emdash;empty.

In this present move, those who have no problem with speaking in tongues anymore are stumbled by other manifestations, such as uncontrolled laughter, or falling, or shaking, or something else.

As I continued to read and hear more about what was going on and how it was spreading, I became aware of a handful of men that the Lord seemed to be using to ignite the fires of this revival all over the country. I kept watching and listening to see when one of them would come to Southern California so that I could go and get under the power of these meetings and catch the fire myself.

In the summer of 1994 the Anaheim Vineyard sponsored a week of meetings called, "Let The Fire Fall." Not one, but several of these key men whom God was using to spread the revival were there&emdash;and so was I.

The first night was a very unusual meeting. After an hour or so of gloriously anointed praise and worship, John Wimber got up and introduced three young people whose lives had been touched by the revival. As each one tried to give his testimony, he was shaking so hard he could hardly hold the microphone steady long enough to say anything. I don't mean trembling, I mean shaking.

Then the laughter started and began to spread throughout the vast auditorium that was totally packed with people from all over the United States and several foreign countries. It seemed to me that there were no spectators, but that 100% of those present were caught up in what was happening. No one was there to grieve the spirit. All were there to receive. All were hungry and thirsty for more of Jesus.

The powerful presence of God was unmistakable from the very first. It was as if a teaching was totally unnecessary. We all knew why we were there. "LET THE FIRE FALL" says it all! It was such a moving meeting that the teaching that was planned that night never took place. One of the characteristics of this revival is that almost every service is more spontaneous than planned.

I purposely went to this service alone. I wanted to have perfect liberty to respond to God in any way he wanted me to without being bothered with what somebody who knew me might think.

I have been fully involved in the Charismatic Renewal since 1972 and most of the things I witnessed at Vineyard, Anaheim, that night, I had seen many times before; but there was one thing different. There was a powerful anointing present. One could simply speak a word or make a gesture and it seemed to penetrate and do a wonderful work in the hearts of people.

For years I had studied the great revivals of history. I had taught on revival and had been involved in many efforts to promote revival. I had taught that revival in its simplest form is nothing more or less than a new beginning of obedience to God.

Now God was revealing to me an added dimension of revival. He was showing me that there is a spiritual element in revival that can actually change the atmosphere in a place and make it so supercharged with the life of God that it is almost irresistible.

Some began to tremble and shake under the powerful presence of this anointing. Others fell to the floor. In a few cases it seemed to me that the person was being delivered from an evil spirit because of the commotion taking place. That was somewhat ugly and scary for some, but I knew from experience that the results would be very, very good.

At one point in the meeting one of the leaders went to the microphone and gave an invitation for all those who knew that they had once had a greater anointing on their lives. We were asked to walk down to the stage area where several trained counselors were laying hands on people and ministering to them. For some time I stood and watched what was going on and suddenly I felt the Lord speaking to me and saying, "You will never receive anything if you remain a spectator."

That was all I needed to hear. I immediately left my seat and made my way over fallen bodies and through the crowded aisles to
the front of the auditorium where people were standing waiting for ministry.

I need to say at this point that as a teacher of the Word of God for the past 40 years, I have been unflinching in my stand that "the just shall live by his faith" and not by his feelings and that we are never to seek an experience for the sake of having an experience.

I am well aware that we are to put our faith out in front and let our feelings follow our faith. But I am also aware of some of the overpowering experiences that men and women of the Bible went through that changed them "into another person" such as Saul in the Old Testament and Paul and Peter in the New Testament.

As I stood there alone with God in that crowded room, I prayed silently, "Lord, you know my heart. You know how dry I am. You know how hungry and thirsty I am for you and for the power of the Holy Spirit to rest on my life and ministry. You know the struggles that I have been going through. Oh, God, touch me tonight. Fill me tonight. Let your fire burn in me as it has never burned before! Make me an instrument in your hands of your salvation, your healing, and your deliverance, O, God!"

I was so thirsty! I felt like King David who said, "O, God, Thou art my God;...My soul thirsts for thee, my flesh yearns for Thee, In a dry and weary land where there is no water." (Psa. 63:1)

I had been walking across a dry, dry desert for several years in my personal life and ministry and had been experiencing periods of oppression and depression in an ongoing spiritual battle.

I remembered the promise in Isaiah 44:3, "I will pour water on him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground." As I stood there at the altar I knew that I was the dry ground and I was desperately waiting for the floods to come.

Just then I felt two warm, gentle hands on my back. I selfishly hoped it was John Wimber or one of the "five-star generals" whom God had used so wonderfully to spread this revival in so many places. I looked, and it was an unknown "Ananias" who had come to minister to me.

At first, I was a little disappointed, but I was so desperate to enter into this wonderful flow of God's Spirit that it really didn't matter to me anymore. I knew that God could use an "Ananias" in my life just as he had used Ananias in the life of Paul.

I lifted my hands and began to pray in the spirit. I had already promised myself that I would not try to make anything happen, but that I would not resist it if anything did happen. I said, "Lord, I am willing to fall, to tremble, to shake, to quake, to laugh, to cry, to leap, to dance, to shout, or to bounce off the walls if necessary. Whatever it takes, Lord, I will do it if you will just pour out this anointing on me. But I want it to be you and not just me trying to make something happen."

The instant this brother laid his hands on me and began to pray, I felt a warmth both upon me and inside of me. It was so tangible and so sweet and good and comforting that I began to cry. It was a cry that came from the uttermost depths of my soul. The best description of what I experienced in that moment is a passage from the book of Genesis that describes the great flood, "And all the fountains of the great deep were broken up."

I felt it was the most "delicious" cry that I had ever experienced in my whole life. It was a healing cry. It was a releasing cry. The tears flowed so freely. I felt that an inner washing was taking place so deep within me that it reached down and down and touched the depths of my inner man on a level that had never been touched before.

I said, "Lord, please don't let this man take his hands off me. Let this washing continue and continue and continue. I want all of your fullness! Complete the work, O, God!"

This brother just kept on ministering to me, "Give him more, Lord! Fill him, Lord! Stir him! Anoint him, Lord! Bless him and refresh him! More, Lord! More! More, Lord!" On and on he prayed. I was weeping and praising God at the same time for what was happening.

That lasted for several minutes. After he left and went on to minister to someone else, I continued in the Lord's presence with this sweet refreshing fire of God rolling over me, body, soul and spirit.

Since that night, several months ago, I have had the same experience many times. (As I write this, the tears are flowing again.) It is so releasing, so cleansing, so healing. It is almost indescribable. It is a cry of joy and not of pain.

For several days afterward, I would be up at night, sometimes at two or three o'clock in the morning, praising God and dancing through the house. Since then, I have experienced almost all the manifestations of this revival including "holy laughter."

A week later I wrote the following letter to John Wimber:

"Dear John, I was greatly blessed, refreshed, restored, revived, encouraged, refired, reinspired, refilled, reanointed, and built up during the week of LET THE FIRE FALL! I am in a full-time ministry of missionary evangelism that takes me to many different countries. For a long time I have been teaching on "The New Anointing," emphasizing the need for being filled with the Holy Spirit over and over again, but we were not seeing its fullness.

"A few months ago I...heard about two pastors in San Diego who went to Toronto and came back SUPER-CHARGED in the power of the Holy Spirit! I was reminded of Azusa Street and how people came from all over the world to that fire and went away to light other fires.

"I prayed that God would make it possible for me to attend some meetings where I could get my own fire lit and your meetings were God's provision for me.

"A friend recently gave me a video of what's happening in the MAJOR REVIVAL movement in China. It is actual footage of some of the house church meetings in the underground church. Would you believe it? It looked a lot like the move of the Spirit that I witnessed last week at Anaheim Vineyard.

"I'm wondering if you'd like to view this video, or even show it to the whole church there? It will be a great encouragement for them to see that what's happening in China is what's happening here, with very little difference.

"I plan to attend other services there this week. I'd be happy to bring the video for you to view. I think it will also be a strong CONFIRMATION that we are not off into something weird.

Sincerely in Christ

I can never again doubt that this is a genuine move of God. These times of laughter and weeping and laying before God after being "slain in the spirit" are times of inward renewal, emotional healing, and even deliverance from tormenting spirits.

God has given me a great desire to help spread the fire of this move of the Spirit. I believe we are seeing the leading edge of a major end-time, world-wide revival which has been prophesied for many years. DON'T LAUGH AT THE LAUGHING REVIVAL. It is more than laughter. It just may turn out to be the greatest move of the Spirit of God in the history of the church.

What's more, it might even be the final end-time harvest that will take place just prior to the second coming of Christ. That day is coming. This just may be it! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

CHAPTER THREE

REVIVAL HAS BEEN PROPHESIED

The following are excerpts from a few of the many prophesies that have been received by the church since the mid-eighties concerning a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The first one was given to David Miner. In this prophecy, the Holy Spirit speaks of two winds that will blow. The first one has been blowing for about ten years. This wind has been blowing on the church to purge and purify it in preparation for the second wind which will be the wind of a powerful revival in which there will be many signs and wonders. In his mercy, God is still allowing us to turn our faces into the wind, even though the second wind has already started to blow.

TURN YOUR FACE INTO THE WIND

"The Spirit of God would say to you that the wind of the Holy Spirit is blowing throughout the land. The Church, however, is incapable of fully recognizing this Wind. Just as your nation has given names to its hurricanes, so I have put My Name on this Wind. This Wind shall be named Holiness Unto The Lord.

"Because of a lack of understanding, some of My people will try to find shelter from the Wind, but in so doing, they shall miss My work. This Wind has been sent to blow through every institution that has been raised in My name. In those institutions that have substituted their name for Mine, they shall fall by the impact of My Wind. Those institutions shall fall like cardboard shacks in a gale. Ministries that have not walked in uprightness before Me shall be broken and fall.

THIS IS MY WIND

"For this reason man will be tempted to brand this as a work of Satan, but do not be misled. This is My Wind. I cannot tolerate My Church in its present form, nor will I tolerate it. Ministries and organizations will shake and fall in the face of this Wind, and even though some will seek to hide from the Wind, they shall not escape. It shall blow against your lives and all around you will appear crumbling, and so it shall.

"But never forget THIS IS MY WIND, saith the Lord. With tornado force it will come and appear to leave devastation, but the Word of the Lord comes and says, "Turn your face into the Wind and let it blow." For only that which is not of Me shall be devastated. You must see this as necessary.

A SECOND WIND

"Be not dismayed. For after this, My Wind shall blow again. Have you not read how My Breath blew on the valley of dry bones? So it shall breathe on you. This Wind will come in equal force as the first Wind. This Wind too will have a name. It shall be called, THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

"It shall bring My government and order. Along with that it shall bring My power. The supernatural shall come in this Wind. The world will laugh at you because of the devastation of that first Wind, but they will laugh no more. For this Wind will come with force and power that will produce the miraculous among My people and the fear of God shall fall on the nation.

"My people will be willing in the day of My power, saith the Lord. In my first Wind that is upon you now, I will blow out pride, lust, greed, competition, and jealousy, and you will feel devastated, but haven't you read, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven"? So out of your poverty of spirit I will establish My Kingdom. Have you not read, "The Kingdom of God is in the Holy Spirit?" So by My Spirit, My kingdom will be established and made manifest.

"Know this also, there will be those who shall seek to hide from this present Wind and they will try to flow with the second Wind. But again, they will be blown away by it. Only those who have turned their faces into the present Wind shall be allowed to be propelled by the second Wind.

"You have longed for revival and a return to the miraculous and the supernatural. You and your generation shall see it, but it shall only come by My process, saith the Lord.

"The Church of this nation cannot contain My power in its present form. But as it turns to the Wind of the Holiness of God, it shall be purged and changed to contain My glory. This is judgment that has begun in the house of God, but it is not the end. When the second Wind has come and brought in My harvest, then shall the end come."

THE NEXT MOVE OF GOD
(Excerpts from a prophetic writing by John Paul Jackson)

"What is the next great move of God going to look like? Who is going to be impacted? How broad will it be? What will be the result?

"All of us would like to know the answers to those questions. While I do not know a whole lot more than many others, there are a few things that I believe the Lord has shown me, over the years, about some of those question. In the 1980s, while I lived in Dallas and Kansas City, the Lord began to show me a wonderful move of God that was coming in the mid 1990s...that there was going to be another move of the Holy Spirit across many nations...and many signs and wonders would come on the people in the church just as it did in the "upper room" in the second chapter of Acts.

ANOTHER JESUS PEOPLE MOVEMENT?

"The Lord went on to reveal that some would say this move of God was another "Jesus People" movement, due to the number of prodigals and new converts that would be seen coming to the Lord. Yet, the Lord indicated that this move of God would be deeper and much broader than that.

"He showed me...

* A power and display of the supernatural will be seen that has not been consistently seen since the days of the early church.

* Many reports of "tongues of fire" sitting on people's heads, drunkenness of the spirit being widespread in the church, mass waves of laughter and crying would once again sweep through churches, demons would shriek and cry out as the presence of the Holy Spirit intensified.

* People healed during worship and during the message without anyone praying for them.

* It would not be unusual for several people to give their lives to the Lord while all the 'power stuff' was happening.

* Personal, lasting fruit of the spirit and the instant ability to overcome things that were previously tormenting to the person.

* Denominational boundaries that separate churches become insignificant in the presence of the Holy Spirit.

* This anointing and power will not be limited to one man nor to one church.

* It will be scattered over many cities and nations, not just located in one geographic area.

* It will come in surges. The first surge will get the church's attention and begin to build and repair the church from within. The second surge will bring in prodigals. The third surge will bring in the new converts.

* There is no set pattern or time-frame for these surges to occur. In some locations all three will happen back to back, while in other locations it will happen over the course of a year or more.

* Much like the ocean has large swells with several smaller waves in between, there will be waves between surges. The first wave seemed to be that of the breaking of the restrictions that our mind, will, and emotions place on us. It's like the breaking of our own personal old wineskins.

* As this move matures, repentance from dead works will become a strong focus. Things that God used to wink at, he will now call for repentance.

* It will happen where pastors are transparent and vulnerable. It seems both qualities have to be present. Transparency allows us to tell what we have been through. Vulnerability allows us to tell what we are going through.

WHAT IS GOING ON NOW?

"It's happening! We see the cloud the size of a hand, and are beginning to feel the sprinkles from it. The very thing that so many men of God have been crying out for has started. It is happening with many ministries and in many churches in many cities. It has even begun here in Moline, Illinois. The Spirit of God is being stirred up again. Places like Lakeland, Florida; Toronto, Canada; and San Diego, California; it's happening in England and the United Kingdom as well.

"Many places across the country and other nations, in particular, have been meeting every night for several weeks. It's even happening here with PRM (Prophetic Reformation Ministries). Over the last few months we have seen marked increases in power and anointing from one meeting to the next. People lying all over the floor for two to four hours, unable to get up. Some have said they felt 'glued to the floor!' Demonized people are crying out and being delivered. Masses of people are laughing, and crying simultaneously.

"People are getting saved without an altar call. Various healings of all kinds taking place. Marriages are being restored. People are actually becoming spiritually stronger in the weeks and months following meetings.

"Children are falling under the power, praying for people&emdash;and cancers are being healed! Children are laying hands on people and having spectacular words of knowledge and prophetic utterances that are amazingly accurate.

"This move of God seems to be first hitting the broken pastors and broken churches. God's Spirit is touching places where there has been great conflict, touching pastors who have been battling with feelings of failure&emdash;broken men with broken churches.

"Are all the things that happen in these meetings from God? No, they are not. However, most are from God. Where there is the fire of God, there will often be a wild fire. But, I'd rather have real fire with a little wildfire than no fire! One person scoffed at all the bodies lying on the floor, offended at the manifestations he witnessed.

"This person asked me if I thought that God was in these manifestations. 'There are some people laughing and falling that did not do so by the hand of God,' I said, 'But there are also people who are getting healed and delivered from things that have tormented them for years. Do you think God is the one doing these things?' He replied, 'Yes, I do.'

"I then replied and said, 'Apparently God is not offended by this because he is healing, delivering, and binding up the broken ones. Therefore, neither am I going to be offended; I'm going to bless what he is doing!'

"Many things which we find offensive, God finds beautiful. And, so it is with little children. Little children are not easily offended, nor are they quick to judge others' actions or motives. Their level of faith is greater than their level of sophistication.

"May we be slow to judge and quick to embrace the manifestation of God's Spirit among us. May we not look upon the manifestations of the Spirit just for the sake of manifestations themselves. Rather, let us look upon the fruit of these manifestations in the lives of those God touches. Let us bless that which God is blessing. May we all be as little children and changed by the power of the Spirit, for such is the Kingdom of Heaven."

THE BIG ONE

God never does anything without telling his prophets, especially major events such as a worldwide move that will affect millions and millions of people. Many prophets have sounded the trumpet over the past several years:

THE BIG ONE IS COMING!!!

THE BIG ONE IS COMING!!!

The Spirit has witnessed it to all our hearts as millions of believers have prayed and fasted and cried out to God for these times of refreshing.

Are we ready to receive from God that for which we have prayed, even if it comes to us with all these strange and messy manifestations and with the dubious title of THE LAUGHING REVIVAL?

Just remember, Jesus did not make his triumphal entry into Jerusalem riding on a white stallion but on "the colt of an ass."

CHAPTER FOUR

HOW TO ENTER INTO THIS REVIVAL

There are two ways to enter fully into this revival. I include the word "fully" because there are many whose lives have been touched by this move of God who have splashed around in the refreshing waters for awhile and have gone on their way not knowing what happened or what they had touched or what had touched them. They have not followed on to fully cooperate with God to bring the anointing to its fullness in their lives and have drifted back into the old rut.

Revival is the work of God and man--not God alone.

Someone once remarked to the famous botanist, Luther Burbank, about his beautifully landscaped trees and gardens on his estate, "How marvelous are the works of God!" the visitor sighed.

"Yes, marvelous indeed," replied Burbank, "but you should have seen it when God had it all by himself!" As we co-labor with God to promote revival, we will see it grow and expand in every direction. We must also co-labor with God to extend the revival into all areas of our own personal lives.

TWO WAYS TO ENTER INTO REVIVAL AND CO-LABOR
WITH GOD

We may enter into this revival movement in one of two ways: The most common way is to prepare our hearts before God according to II Chronicles 7:14. This is done through a sometimes lengthy process of repentance and confession of sin which is explained below.
Another way is by exposing ourselves to the supernatural anointing that rests upon those who are fully submerged in it. Let's look first at:

THE ANOINTING

Some are entering this revival by just being exposed to the anointing that rests on others and then they do the work of heart searching, while others first do the work of heart preparation and then get exposed to the anointing. Some are only lightly touched by the revival while others are fully caught up in it and enjoy the fullest benefits of it.

A good example of the power of the anointing was the life of the apostle Peter after the day of Pentecost. It says in Acts 5:15, "...people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed. Such is the power

In the first great outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost the onlookers were "amazed and perplexed and they asked one another, 'What does this mean?"' The answer that Peter gave to this question was, "This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy; your young men will see visions; your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy."'

Revival is an outpouring (anointing) of the Holy Spirit that occurs when men have cooperated with God through repentance, humility, prayer, and faith.

Widespread revival happens when there has been a larger concerted effort, especially in united prayer, to fulfill God's requirements for revival. These are the movements that sometimes extend all over the world and become well known, such as the Welsh Revival, the Azusa Street Revival, and the various Great Awakenings throughout the history of the United States. They always involve the supernatural because the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is the ANOINTING!

The anointing is the outpouring. Just as the ancient Hebrew priests poured out the oil on the heads of the king, it is a substance that comes upon those who receive it. It is a miracle working substance. Jesus said, "You shall receive power (miracle working power) when the Holy Spirit comes upon you." (Acts 1:8)

We have the Holy Spirit "in" us from the time we are born again, but he does not come "upon" us until we receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit like the disciples did on the day of Pentecost.

Jesus said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me...." (Luke 4:18) The baptism in the Holy Spirit is the anointing. Jesus did not have the anointing for the first 30 years of his life. He did no miracles till after he had been anointed. He received it the day he was baptized in the River Jordan. He had the Holy Spirit "in" him from the day he was born, for he was born of the Spirit at birth. The Holy Spirit came "upon" him when he was baptized by John (see John 1:32-33).

THE ANOINTING IS TRANSFERABLE

Jesus said, "And these signs shall follow them that believe, in my name they shall...lay hands on the sick and they shall recover." (Mark 16:15)

It was through the laying on of hands that many were healed. Why lay hands on people? It is for the purpose of imparting the anointing. The anointing is a flowing thing. It is miracle working power. When the anointing flows in, demons and disease are driven out and the person experiences healing and deliverance.

"God did extraordinary miracles through Paul. Handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them." (Acts 19:11) This anointing rests on all who are filled with the Holy Spirit. Some have a greater measure than others. Some have allowed their anointing to ebb away through worldliness or disobedience to the known will of God.

The anointing is stronger on some than on others. It is a growing thing. We can have more if we want it, if we are willing to pay the price for it.

A DOUBLE PORTION

Elisha was a young man who served the prophet Elijah faithfully. On the day that Elijah was to be taken up in the chariot of fire to meet the Lord, Elisha said, "I want a double portion of your spirit on me!" He was so hungry for it and so persistent in his quest that he did receive that day a very strong anointing from the Lord as the mantle of Elijah fell on him.

He served the Lord faithfully under this anointing for many years, doing many miracles, then he grew old and died. They buried him in a cave. In II Kings 13:15 we read a most remarkable little story couched in three or four sentences:

"Elisha died and was buried. Now Moabite raiders used to enter the country every spring. Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man's body into Elisha's tomb. When the body touched Elisha's bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet."

The anointing that had come upon Elisha during his lifetime had remained upon him and even penetrated his bones which still had life-giving power in them. This is how the anointing works.

THE ANOINTING IS TANGIBLE

A woman who had an issue of blood for 12 years and could get no help from the medical profession came to Jesus and touched his clothes as she said in her heart, "If I can just touch his clothes, I will get well." When she touched his robe, Jesus said, "Who touched me?" His disciples said, "Lord, with so many people in the crowd, many people are touching you." But he said, "I felt virtue go out of me. Someone touched me with faith." The woman "felt in her body that she had been healed of her infirmity."

The anointing is tangible. We do not always feel it, but often we do. Jesus, in the instance above, felt something. The woman who was healed also felt something. Something flowed out of Jesus and into the woman and drove out the disease. That is how the anointing works.

That word "virtue" in Mark chapter five is the same word Jesus used in Acts 1:8 when he said, "But you shall receive power (virtue) after the Holy Spirit comes upon you..." The power that came through Jesus' clothes and entered into that woman and drove out the disease is the same power that comes upon us when we receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and it is transferable.

In Luke 6:17-19 we read, "He went down with them and stood in a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people...who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evil spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all." The flow of this wonderful anointing can have a dynamic effect on a large crowd of people at the same time.

THE ANOINTING IS SUBSTANCE

The anointing is substance. It is not a thought, or a concept, or a theory, or a law, or a principle. It is something concrete, definite, real, and practical that has substance. It comes upon us and it can be communicated to others through the laying on of our hands and sometimes just by coming into close proximity to one another. It can be transferred through cloth, bones, or other things as we have seen above.

HEART-SEARCHING AND REPENTANCE

However you come into a real revival, you will not escape the fires that attend such movements. That fire is a fire of holiness. The Holy Spirit is not named THE HOLY SPIRIT for nothing! He is holy and he will not let up on us until we are holy in thought, word and deed.

Every major revival has been attended with this deep heart-searching, repentance, and cleansing. The Lord knows that we are only as happy as we are holy, so all of his purging, purifying, scraping, peeling, blasting, and scrubbing is for our own good. The joy of the Holy Spirit can be quenched by any form of disobedience, therefore we must submit to this process.

Get alone with God with a pen and paper. Ask the Lord to reveal to you anything that is wrong in your life. Wait in silence. He is very capable of communicating with you in a way that you will not misunderstand. Whatever comes to your mind, confess it and repent of it. Tell the Lord that it is your desire to be free from that sin forever. He is not only the one who forgives our sins; he is the one who also delivers from sin.

After you have written down the things the Lord reveals to you, ask him to show you anything else. Wait again in silence. Write down whatever he shows you. Continue in this process until there is nothing left that he shows you. When you know that you have done a thorough work of heart-searching and repentance, take the paper on which you have written all your sins and write across it in LARGE LETTERS, I JOHN 1:7 "THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST, GOD'S SON, CLEANSES ME FROM ALL SIN." Then, tear it up and throw it in the trash.

Never again allow the enemy to bring to your mind any of those things you wrote down and trashed. They are under the blood of Jesus, never to be remembered against you forever! Now you are clean. Now you are holy. Now you are pure. Now you are free!!!

The next step, if you have not already taken it, is to go, as fast as you can, to the nearest church where the revival fires are burning. Ask God to anoint you with the oil of joy! He will surely meet the one who is hungry and thirsty and is crying out for a satisfying portion of his grace and power. If your church has not yet entered into this revival, go to one that has. God may use you to light some fires.

For those who may be thinking that this anointing of joy is perhaps OK, but that it is not the same as the outpourings of the Holy Spirit that came upon Jesus and the early church, consider the following passage from Hebrews 1:9, "You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy." These words were spoken to Jesus by the Father.

When Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of his baptism, he was anointed with the "oil of joy." And when he said to those of his own hometown of Nazareth that, "the Spirit of the Lord is upon me for he has anointed me to preach, heal, liberate captives, give sight to the blind," etc., he was talking about the anointing of JOY! The anointing of joy enables us to do the same kind of works that Jesus did. The infilling of the Holy Spirit is the anointing of joy. The joy of the Lord is our strength. And strength is power, power to do the works of Jesus.

CHAPTER FIVE

SIGNS OF A TRUE REVIVAL

Revival is not the perfect will of God. A steady flow of God's life and power is his perfect will for our spiritual lives. Healing is not the perfect will of God. Health is his perfect will. A need for healing indicates that someone is sick, and sickness is not the perfect will of God.

The need for revival indicates that there has been a spiritual decline, which is never the will of God. But revival is the will of God for those who need it; for those who have cooled off in their walk with Jesus and need a fresh touch of God's anointing and a new infilling of the Holy Spirit.

NOT A MIRACLE

Revival is not a miracle. It is a simple cooperating with God according to his promise in II Chronicles 7:14, "If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and will heal their land."

The "if " above indicates the conditions of true revival. The Good news is that God's people have been humbling themselves, praying, seeking his face, and turning from their wicked ways in sufficient numbers worldwide so that revival is flowing in many lands at the present time.

REVIVAL IS CONTAGIOUS

The added dimension that makes it so much more exciting is the fact that revival and the blessings of a widespread revival are contagious. It is similar to an epidemic. Everyone who catches the disease is a carrier of the disease. In the case of the anointing of the Holy Spirit, everyone who receives the anointing is a carrier of the revival.

Revival is like a fire that burns. The bigger the fire, the more apt it is to leap over walls and fences and roads and cause a multitude of other fires. This present move of God is being reported around the world in wider and wider circles.
OPEN HEAVENS

Added to all of the above is the fact that because of successful spiritual warfare, there is now open heavens and the blessings of God are being poured out in many places all over the earth without hindrance.

Over the past several years we have witnessed a prayer movement that has no parallel in the history of the church. And because of this we are now seeing a major breakthrough in the

NOT A SOVEREIGN ACT

Revival is not a sovereign act of God. A field of corn is not a sovereign act of God. In both cases it is God and man working together to bring forth the harvest. We do not pray down revival, as if through our continual crying we finally persuade God to give us something that he is reluctant to give us. Prayer is certainly the heart of revival, but it is only a part. We must also humble ourselves and repent of sins. Only then will we experience the showers of blessing.

REVIVAL HAS TWO PARTS

A revival has two parts--man's part and God's part. God's part is to pour out his Spirit in power and man's part is to provide a channel through which God's mighty power can operate.

The first great outpouring of the Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost. There have been many similar outpourings since then, but there is promised in the Word of God that there will be a tremendous outpouring prior to the Second Coming of Christ (see Joel 2:23, 28-30, James 5:7, Zachariah 10:1). Many feel that this final outpouring has already begun and is growing in scope and intensity.

God is seeking to awaken the church to what is happening so that they can fully cooperate with him in the enlargement of this wave of revival blessing. He is saying to the church, "Behold, I am doing a new thing, now it is springing forth, do you not perceive it?" (IS.43:18)

I can see the Lord cupping both hands to his mouth and shouting to the church:

"WAAAAAAAAAKE UUUUUUUUUUUUP!!!!!!!"

Some of the signs of a true revival are:

Conviction: A deep conviction of sin prevails in times of revival. Sin begins to appear exceedingly sinful. Things we once tolerated in our lives now cry out for confession and repentance.

Repentance: In revival, repentance is an ongoing process. As more and more dross surfaces from the heart, it is put away and "the blood of Jesus Christ, God's son, cleanses us from all sin." We rejoice in full forgiveness of sins according to I John 1:7 until God reveals something else in our lives that displeases him. Then immediate turning from the sin brings immediate joy and in this way we walk with him daily in a process of cleansing.

Supplication: Revivals have always been characterized by prayer; days and nights of prayer, prayer with fasting, prayer vigils, praying together and praying alone. The very spirit of prayer is
the spirit of revival.

The first great revival came after a ten-day prayer meeting and it has been the same with every significant spiritual outpouring since. The great Sialkot Revival in India was born in a 30-day prayer meeting led by John Hyde, who became known as "Praying Hyde". Thousands were praying in Wales just prior to the mighty outpouring there in 1904.

Dr. A. T. Pierson said, "From the day of Pentecost, there has been not one great spiritual awakening in any land which has not begun in a union of prayer, though only among two or three; no such outward, upward movement has continued after such prayer meetings declined.

Restitution: When the Holy Spirit is allowed to plow and purge our hearts thoroughly, it usually involves the healing of a broken relationship. Unforgiveness, resentments, bitterness, pride, gossip, backbiting, and hate must all be put away and, leaving no stone unturned, a full reconciliation made wherever needed.

This restitution includes payment of old debts, returning stolen or borrowed property, apologies made and confessions to one another of wrong attitudes. The Holy Spirit is leading us into a transparent relationship with God, with each other and with ourselves. No hidden motives, no using of psychology to manipulate others.

Brokenness: One who is truly experiencing a revival will be in a state of brokenness. Brokenness is a heart attitude of meekness and humility. A person who is walking in brokenness is pliable in the hands of the Lord. He is not easily offended by others. He chooses rather to offend his friends by telling them the truth, than to offend God by remaining silent. He is maintaining an attitude and relationship with God that says, "I'll go where you want me to go. I'll do what you want me to do. I'll say what you want me to say."

One who is broken is quick to obey Jesus. He becomes a center of revival! Wherever he goes, the fires of the revival spread. He is infectious. The anointing is on him and he is rubbing it off on those around him.

He is constantly at a point of confrontation with the powers of darkness, with the spirit of this world, and with carnal believers. His presence disturbs the status-quo. He is a crisis person. His life and his witness provoke a crisis in others. "They that have turned the world upside down have come here also."

This state of brokenness is only maintained so long as there is obedience to the will of God. In this way the revival continues and spreads.

Breakthrough: "And suddenly there was a sound from heaven as of a rushing, mighty wind...." (Acts 2)

We enter the process of humbling ourselves, praying, seeking God, and turning from all sin. When this process is completed, suddenly there comes a breakthrough. A divine flow of love, joy, power, and supernatural signs and wonders begin to break out in our midst.

As the spring rains softly fall and slowly fill the reservoir, the weight of the water becomes too much and the dam gives way. The water comes crashing over the valley below, sweeping everything before it&emdash;so is revival. It is like a flood! In every true revival, there has been such a release. How far and how wide the flood goes depends on how long the church continues to move with God in nurturing the revival.

After the breakthrough, it is very easy for others to enter into the fullness of the revival. The way has been cleared. The heavens are opened. The blessings are falling and can fall even on those who have not yet dealt with their sins and waywardness. The Lord knows those whose heart's desire is to walk in holiness and purity before him so he pours out the anointing. Later on he gently deals with the weak areas of their lives. Under the new anointing they find that the old strongholds are no longer strongholds. They are easily dealt with in the power of the new anointing.

Restoration: A widespread revival always brings with it the restoration of some New Testament truth that had been lost over the centuries.

The revival under Martin Luther restored the doctrine of justification by faith alone. The revival under Wesley restored the teaching of sanctification by faith. The Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles at the beginning of this century restored the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Charismatic Renewal has been restoring the simplicity of church in getting away from the institutionalized church back to the organic church. Let us be ready for more restoration to take place in the wake of this new wave of joyous refreshing.

Warfare: Demon powers and all the forces of hell are arrayed against a widespread revival. It poses a major threat to their control in the lives of too many people.

The apostle Paul said, "We are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against persons without bodies--the evil rulers of the unseen world, those mighty satanic beings and great evil princes of darkness who rule this world, and against huge numbers of wicked spirits in the spirit world."

If we are to maintain and extend the revival, we will have to learn how to take authority over demon powers. This is beginning to happen all over the world. Churches, missions, Christian organizations and denominations which have virtually ignored the realm of these dark powers are now actively engaged in casting out demons and taking authority over Satan in the name of Jesus. Joy! Revival brings joy! The deep sigh becomes a shout of praise. Rejoicing becomes a way of life! And our joy is our strength! When the Spirit was poured out on the day of Pentecost, there was great joy! "They worshiped together regularly at the temple each day, met in small groups in homes for communion, and shared their meals with great joy and thankfulness, praising God." (Acts 2:46-47; Living Bible)

Unity: Revival brings unity. When God's people are filled with the Holy Spirit, with joy, love and power, they have so much in common that they are unwilling to allow their differences to separate them.

They major on the truths that unite them rather than on the questions that divide them. They see the body of Christ as one body and not as many scattered fragments. They understand that they are "bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh" and that they are "members one of another."

Evangelism: "But the believers...went everywhere preaching the Good news about Jesus." (Acts 8:14; Living Bible)

The outcome of a real revival is spontaneous evangelism by all believers. A revived individual will be a witness to Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit wherever he goes. His life, his presence, and his witness will impact the lives of those around him.

A New love For The Word Of God: In times of refreshing, the Bible becomes a new book to the renewed believer. Bible reading is no longer a dull discipline. It is thrilling to open its pages and rejoice in its truths. Things we never saw before leap out from the pages and ignite our hearts. Tears flow as God speaks into our lives.

A New Obedience To The Great Commission: A concern for missionary outreach into all the world becomes an important aspect of a true and mature revival movement. In all previous revival movements, there has also been a deep concern for the unreached peoples of the world and for the fulfillment of the Great Commission that Jesus gave to the church to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

Miracles, Siqns and Wonders: Revival is a time of renewed and increased miracle working power. The very word, refreshing, or revival, in Acts 3:19 where Peter was explaining the Pentecostal experience, was connected to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the miracles that followed.

Strange And Unusual Manifestations: In every major move of the Spirit in revival blessings, physical and emotional outbursts have been common. At times this has brought questions into the minds of sincere Christians as to whether these things were from God or not. In mighty visitations of power and conviction and during overwhelming outpourings of the Spirit throughout the history of the church, people shake; they quake, they tremble, they cry out, they laugh, they scream, they fall down, they weep, they groan, they shriek, and on and on.

Proverbs 14:4 says, "Without oxen, the stall is clean, but by the strength of the ox there is an abundance of bread." So what if some of the outbursts are unsightly, scary, or undignified? So what if we have some messes to clean up and some things to set in order during times of revival? LET IT HAPPEN!!! The problems of life are better than the problems of death. Better to have to change some diapers and teach manners and have the joy of a baby in the house than to have a neat, clean house all the time and no children or grandchildren. A graveyard is very neat and quiet, too, but the sounds of a children's playground are more exciting to me!

Father, give us the grace to fully cooperate with you in all you are doing in our day to revive the church. In Jesus' name! AMEN!

AFTERWORD

The following word from Vineyard Reflections, May/June 1994 issue, may be of help to those who still have serious doubts as to the validity of this revival of joy:

"Nearly everything we've seen (falling, weeping, laughing, shaking) has been seen before, not only in our own memory, but in revivals all over the world.

"One of my colleagues on the AVC staff, Steve Holt, has compiled an extremely helpful summary of Jonathan Edwards's thoughts on the place of physical manifestations and phenomena in the midst of revival. During the first Great Awakening in America, Edwards was right in the middle of it all. Not only was he a thoughtful participant and observer, but he applied his keen theological mind to the "problem" of religious enthusiasms, which were the object of much scorn and criticism among the religious establishment. Edwards's perspective on revival can be very helpful to us as we evaluate some of the manifestations of the Spirit that we see in our meetings:"

THE BEST EFFECTS, by Jonathan Edwards; from Some Thoughts Concerning the Present Revival (1743)

"Whatever imprudences there have been, and whatever sinful irregularities, whatever vehemence of the passions, and heats of the imagination, transports, and ecstasies, whatever error in judgment, indiscreet zeal; and whatever outcries, faintings, and agitations of body; yet, it is manifest and notorious, that there has been of late a very uncommon influence upon the minds of a very great part of the inhabitants of New England, attended with the best effects.

"There has been a great increase of seriousness, and sober consideration of eternal things; a disposition to hearken to what is said of such things, with attention and affection; a disposition to treat matters of religion with solemnity, and as of great importance, to make these things the subject of conversation; to hear the word of God preached, and to take all opportunities in order to it."

Just after I finished writing the above, I received a fax from, Paul Hawkins, a brother who is a leader in Youth With A Mission and is presently leading a School of Intercession, Worship, and Spiritual Warfare in Taiwan. I am copying the fax in its entirety below. I feel that God gave this fax as a strong confirmation on the things that I have shared in this little book:

"Dear Bob,

I have just received a copy of your article called THIS LAUGHING REVIVAL. Am currently running a School of intercession, Worship and Spiritual Warfare here in Taipei. We have 52 students and 10 staff from 15 nations (20 Chinese from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia), Australia, Denmark, Norway, England, Sweden, Korea, South Africa, India, Brazil, Philippines, Canada and the U.S.

The past two weeks we have seen remarkable outpourings of the Holy Spirit that are exactly as you describe: laughing, weeping,
shaking, falling to the floor sometimes for hours, drunkenness, etc.

Last night several of the staff and students were in the city and had stopped at a McDonald's. Sitting outside they began to laugh and couldn't stop for 50 minutes. They drove back to the school with it, continuing late into the night.

On Friday of last week during the outpouring, for two hours I noted that God was doing deep healing in people. That was the first indication to me of that and then I received your article and on the same day received a fax from a French YWAMer near Paris sharing that he had experienced the same deep healing through tears and laughter when a Parisian church came to the base for a weekend retreat. Some of the parishioners had just returned from Toronto.

Please keep us informed of additional reports as this last one greatly encouraged many of the class to see that God is moving all over the world. Several of the Chinese students had just returned from a DTS outreach and spent a few days at Airport Vineyard. They brought the anointing with them!

Twenty-five of them will join me in Thailand for the YWAM Int'l Consultation at the end of November to intercede for six days during this very important conference of YWAM leadership. You can guess what is in my heart! Many will also be taking an outreach to China at the beginning of December.

DYING TO SELF

DYING TO SELF
EXPERIENCING A LIFE OF LOVE BY FAITH
BY WILLIAM LAW
Edited by Robert Fitts

DYING TO SELF
When your good is evil spoken of
When your wishes are often crossed
Your advise disregarded, your opinions ridiculed
And you refuse to let anger rise in your heart or to defend yourself
But take it all in patient, loving silence
That is dying to self.

When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder
Any irregularity, any lack of punctuality or any annoyance
When you stand face to face with waste
With silly extravagance or with spiritual insensibility
And endure it as Jesus did
That is dying to self.

When you are content with any food, any provision,
Any climate, any culture any clothing, any questioning, any interruption
When you have done the will of God to the best of your knowledge
Then find yourself misunderstood, maligned, set aside, rejected, beaten
Yet at the midnight hour in the dark prison cell you sing praise to God
That is dying to self.

When you never care to refer to yourself
Or defend your own opinions
When you never point out your own good works
Or desire men's commendation
When you can truely love to be unknown yet willing to be well known
That is dying to self.

When you see your brother prosper and have his needs all met
And can honestly rejoice with him without envy or perplexity
While your own needs are far greater and in more desperate situation
When you receive reproof and correction
from one of less experience than yourself
And can humbly submit, finding within you no rebellion,
retaliation, self-sympathy, self defense, self vindication,
self justification, resentment, bitterness or unforgiveness
That is dying to self.

PREFACE
by Andrew Murray

In Dying To Self, a section from his larger work, THE SPIRIT OF LOVE, Law's primary thoughts are these:
The ordinary Christian life is that of a student in training. Under the teaching of scripture, the mind and heart have to be educated and disciplined and the will trained and stirred to seek after a life in which the spirit of love actually fills and rules the soul.
Such a life is possible, but can be received only by the operation of God in which our Lord, as the Lamb of God, reveals himself in the heart and takes full possession. The one real hindrance to this life of the Spirit of Love within us is the power of self that poisons our whole nature.
The chief object of our training is to bring us to the place where we see how utterly helpless we are to work a deliverance from the power of this evil self. The only way to be delivered is through a true and entire death to self. The great secret of this death to self is to be found in a simple and helpless turning from self to God.
This dying to self is the very perfection of faith in Christ as the Lamb of God. At first it does not appear how this can bring such a wonderful deliverance from self or lead to Christ's rising up in our inner man with the light of heaven and the birth of the Spirit of Love. But he goes on to show us how in the humility of the Lamb of God lay the secret of the work He did, and the salvation He gives. He shows us that totally yielding to God in humility, meekness, patience, and resignation is the very perfection of faith in Christ and the one and only condition of God's doing His work in us. Before Law is through we are compelled to acknowledge that here is indeed the place of blessing.
The points that Law stresses are these:
¥ The low state of the spiritual life of the average believer.
¥ The cause of all failure in the Christian life comes from self confidence.
¥ The need of a total surrender of the whole being to the operation of God in our hearts and lives.
¥ The call to turn to Christ in faith as the only deliverance from the power of self.
¥ The certainty of a better life for all who will in self despair trust Christ for it.
¥ The heavenly joy of a life in which the Spirit of Love fills the heart.
What is so helpful is the way which Law shows how humility and utter self-despair with resignation to God's mighty working in simple faith, is the infallible way to be delivered from self and have the Spirit of Love fill the heart.
I pray that the blessing and help his teaching has been to me may be shared by many, and that this little book may be used of God to open up the exceeding riches of His grace in Christ.
Because God's love is the origin of all love, it can be nothing in us but what it is in God, a will to all goodness toward others at all times and on all occasions. And this Spirit of Love is not really yours till it is the spirit of your own life; till you live freely, willingly, and universally according to it. The Spirit of Love can do nothing but love wherever it is and whatever is done to it because it is God Himself in the soul of man.
All sin is nothing but the spirit of man turned away from this love to some form of self seeking. It is this self that crucified Christ, and from this self man must be purified. And there is no way of being thus purified but by dying to self and having the Spirit of Love born in us. This is where we begin to understand the absolute necessity of the teaching on the cross, dying to self, as the only way to experience the life of God within.
A perpetual operation of the Spirit of God within us is absolutely necessary because holiness is not an occasional thing that begins and ends or is only for a certain time and place. It is always alive in us through our thoughts, our wills, our desires, and our affections. If these are to be always holy and good, then the Holy and good Spirit of God must be always operating as a principle of life within us.
The kingdom of heaven must be within us or it can never belong to us. Goodness, godliness, and holiness can only be ours as thinking, willing and desiring are ours by being in us as a power from heaven in the birth and growth of our own inward life.
My one great need then is to be delivered from the power of self. And the work of Christ as our Redeemer is just this. He alone can take from our earthly life of flesh and blood this evil power of self. All I have to do or can do is co-operate with God in resisting and renouncing the evil attitudes and workings of my own evil nature. The bad that we do is only as we resist the Spirit of God within us and the good that we do is only as we conform to the of God within us. Thus our salvation from the evil power of self consists wholly and completely in the life of Jesus operating in us.
This little book, DYING TO SELF, is a dialog between Barnabas and two of his disciples. We'll call them Mark and John. The book is divided into four parts:
Part One- the difference between being impressed by a truth and actually possessing it.
Part Two- the difference between the life of God and the life of self apart from God.
Part Three- the simple but wonderful secret of dying to self as the only way to have the life of God restored in man.
Part Four-the actual enjoyment of this blessing.

INTRODUCTION
William Law did not approach the subject of dying to self as a teaching from the New Testament, but rather from the standpoint of reason, with scriptural knowledge as a basis. What he said in the following dialog was definitely biblical, but was not an explanation of the scriptures themselves.
For some, it will be helpful to look at the New Testament to see what is said there about dying to self. is there such a walk with God mentioned in the words of Jesus or the apostles? The basis for faith is the promises of God. Dwight Moody used to say, "God said! I believe it! And that settles it!" But has God said anything specifically about dying to self in the pages of the Bible, or is this just a theological teaching with no foundation in the written word?
Praise God for the clear logic and the convincing arguments that William Law brings to this subject! They will be sufficient for many to enter into this life of victory and pure love. Others will need both what he teaches as well as the clear teaching from the scriptures as a basis for their faith.
How firm a foundation you saints of the Lord
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He has said
You who unto Jesus for refuge have fled?
BAPTIZED INTO DEATH
The apostle Paul speaks of dying to self in Romans six: "What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? . . . For we know that our old self was crucified with him . . . '
Paul is declaring a truth that applies to all believers whether they are aware of it or not, for he says, "Or don't you know . . ." In other words, Paul is saying that if they had known what it really meant to be baptized into the death of Jesus, it would have resulted in a life of victory over sin. To be baptized into means to be identified with and to be identified with means God sees you the same as he sees the person from whom you take your identity.
For me to be baptized into the death of Jesus means that His death is credited to my account. When Jesus died, I died. I died, not only to the penalty of sin; I died to sin itself and to self. All that the law of God required of me was fully met in the death of Jesus and in addition to that the death of the old man (the sin nature) was accomplished for me at the cross as well.
"Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus." The King James version says, "Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord." We must believe that the work is already done. We have already been declared dead by the Father, so it is safe for me to declare this to be true of myself. And as I do this, God makes my reckoning a reality. this is how faith works. Confess it with your mouth and believe it in your heart and you shall be saved.
YOU DIED
In his letter to the Colossians, as he did in all his letters, Paul admonishes them to live holy and godly lives based on the reality of their full identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. He says, "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, not on earthly things. For your died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God." It is not that we have to do something more in order to die to self; we are already declared to be dead!
Because of our full identification with the death of Jesus, we have nothing else to do but to look to Jesus in faith that the "old man" is dead because we have been pronounced dead by none other than the Lord Himself in his Word! WE DIED WITH HIM WHEN HE DIED! IT IS FINISHED! HE FINISHED IT FOR US! There is no stronger basis for dying to self than the above passage, but there are others just as strong.
I HAVE BEEN CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST
Perhaps the most familiar words of Paul on dying to self are Galatians 2:20, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing."
Paul is not speaking of himself as one who had attained to the state of being crucified as if it were an accomplishment through strenuous effort over a long period of time. He was speaking of his position in Christ that he inherited as a gift of the pure grace of God the moment he was born again! If it had been otherwise, he would not have gone into such detail to clarify to his readers that being crucified with Christ did not come to him as a process of obeying certain rules and lows and requirements in order to enter into it, but rather that it came by faith in the Son of God.
Co-crucifixion with Christ is really ours in inheritance even before we acknowledge or accept it, but it is only ours in experience as it begins to work a transformation in us after we see it, receive it, embrace it, confess it, and live our lives in the light of it. All things in the Kingdom of God are purchased with one currency and one alone, and that currency is FAITH!
ONE DIED FOR ALL AND THEREFORE ALL DIED
Consider the following statement in four translations:
"For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died." (II Cor. 5:14) NIV
"For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died." II Cor. 5:14) ASV
"Because the love of Christ constrains us, for this is our thinking: that if one died for all, then all died." (II Cor. 5:14) Spanish translation
The love of Christ fills our lives because we have believed and received by faith the message that when Christ died for us all, in the books of God, we were all declared to be dead. (II Cor. 5:14) free translation
The word we must understand in order to comprehend the words in the passage above is "imputation". The word "impute" means to charge or credit someone's bank account. It is a book keeping term. If someone put ten thousand dollars into my bank account without my knowledge it would never be of any benefit to me, but when it comes to my attention and I begin to write checks on it, that is the day it becomes a reality in my life. All things in the kingdom of God work by grace through faith. God gives it to us by grace in the form of a promise. We reach out and take it by faith and at that moment we begin to enjoy it. The Word of God gives us a firm foundation for William Law's teaching on dying to self. It confirms the premise that it is not a matter of killing self, as if it is an achievement after a hard-fought battle, or of starving self to death, as if we were capable of bringing self to the place of death by our efforts. It is simply a matter of taking God at his word and entering into a life of love by grace through faith.

PART ONE
The difference between admiring and possessing (Barnabas, the teacher, is concluding his lengthy teaching on perfect love with his disciples, Mark and John.)
Barnabas - Before you leave, Mark and John, I need a little more time with you to share on the practical part of the Spirit of Love so that doctrine and practice may go hand in hand. It is one thing to know a truth and another thing to put it into practice and live in the reality of it.
Mark- Whatever you say, but I don't think this teaching on the Spirit of Love could possibly have any more power over me than it has already. It has so gotten possession of my heart that everything else is under its dominion. I can do nothing else but love. I have no taste for anything else.
Barnabas- I know you are speaking sincerely, but I am also convinced that you are not aware of your true experience in relation to the Spirit of Love. You are as yet only charmed with the sight, or rather the sound of it; it's real birth is yet unfelt and unfound in you. You are delighted with the teaching itself but you have forgotten that the birth of the Spirit of Love in the inner man can only come forth in its proper time and place and from its proper causes.
Nothing that is a birth can be brought about by a simple mental or emotional experience such as reasoning or feeling. You may love it as much as you please or think it the most charming thing in the world; you may consider everything but dross and dung in comparison to it and yet have no more of its birth in you than the blind man has of light. He may have the most charming notion of what light is like but is still blind. It is the same in the realm of the spirit. The Spirit of Love can only be found where it rises up from within as the birth of a baby. The Spirit of Love and the Price of its Possession
Mark - But if I have come no farther than this, what good has all your teaching on the Spirit of Love done in me? I have fully believed and received all that you have shared!
Barnabas - You are confusing two things which are totally different. You make no distinction between the teaching that sets forth the nature, and the necessity of the Spirit of Love and the Spirit of Love itself. They are two different things. You may be quite full of the teaching on love and still be quite empty of love itself. I have said everything that I could to show you the truth, excellence, and necessity of the Spirit of Love because it is all important for you to be well established in this teaching. But all that I have said is only to encourage you to buy it at its own price. For if you think that you have it because you are so highly pleased with that which you have heard, you only embrace the shadow and not the substance.
Mark - What is the price that I must give for it?
Barnabas - You must give up all confidence in your own ability to live a life pleasing to God and accept the fact that it cannot be done by human effort.
Mark - Proceed as you please to lay open all my defects concerning the Spirit of Love for I do want to be set right in a matter so important as this.
John - Let me first observe, Barnabas, that I am afraid the matter is much worse with me than it is with Mark. This teaching seems to fill all my heart and yet I seem to have no strength to put it into practice in my daily life. I find myself as much under the power of the old nature as I was before I heard it.
Two Ways to Seek Goodness
Barnabas - Every kind of virtue and goodness may be brought into us in two different ways. They may be taught us outwardly by men, by rules and precepts, or they may be inwardly born in us as the genuine birth of our own renewed spirit. As we learn them only from men, by rules and instruction, we are at best only changed in our outward behavior. Our heart is left in its natural state, unchanged. Our passions and lusts are only put under a forced restraint which will occasionally break forth in spite of the laws and rules we impose against them. This way of learning and attaining goodness, though imperfect, is absolutely necessary and must have its time and work in us; yet it is only for a time, just as the law was our schoolmaster to lead us to Christ.
We are first babes in understanding as well as in strength before we become men. But all outward instruction, whether it come to us from good men or from the Bible itself can make nothing perfect, and yet is it a necessary step in bringing us to perfection. The true perfection and value of the written Word of God is set forth by Paul to Timothy: "From a child (he says) you have known the Scriptures which are able to make you wise unto salvation, which comes through faith in Christ Jesus." All scriptures have no other good or benefit in them except as they lead us to a salvation that is not to found in themselves, but in Christ Jesus. Their purpose is only to teach us where to seek and to find the fountain and source of all light and knowledge.
Of the prophets he said the same in different words: "And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the Morning Star arises in your hearts."
What was said of the Old Testament scriptures must also be said of the New Testament; it is our tutor to lead us to Christ. It is a light like that of prophecy, to which we are to take great heed until Christ, as the dawning of the day, or The Morning Star, arises in our hearts.
No instruction that comes in the form of words can do more for us than sounds and words can do. They can only direct us to something that is better than themselves that can be the true light, life, spirit, and power of holiness in us.
Mark - I cannot deny what you say and yet it seems to me that you are minimizing the importance of the Scriptures.
Barnabas - Would you rather I say that the written Word of God is that Word which was with God, which was God, by whom all things were made; that Word of God which was made flesh for the redemption of the world; that Word of God of which we must be born again; that Word which lights every man who comes into the world? Would you have me say that all this is to be understood as the written Word of God? Not so! Jesus alone is that Word of God that can be the light, life, and salvation of fallen man.
Indeed, how is it possible to more highly exalt the written Word than by receiving it as a true, outward, verbal direction to the only true light and salvation of man, Jesus ? Suppose you had been a true disciple of John the Baptist, whose only calling was to prepare the way to Christ; how could you have a more magnified ministry than by going from his teaching to be taught by Christ, to whom he directed you? John was indeed a burning and shining light and so are the holy scriptures; but he was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. Jesus was the true light which lights every man who comes into the world.
How untrue it would be to say that you had undervalued the work and the character of John the Baptist because he was not received as the light itself, but only a true witness of that light and a guide to it. Now if you can show me, Mark, that the written Word in the Bible can have any higher function or power than such a ministerial one as John the Baptist had, I am ready to hear you.
Mark - I do not see how I could do that.
The Birth of Goodness in the Inner Man
Barnabas - Then you should be fully convinced that there are two ways of attaining knowledge, goodness and virtue: one by the ministry of outward, verbal instruction and the other by an inward birth of divine light, goodness and virtue in our own renewed spirit. The sole purpose of the outward is to lead us to the inward, and is of no benefit to us except as it carries us farther than itself into the reality of the light, the Word, and the Spirit of God, just as John the Baptist would have been of no benefit to his disciples unless he had guided them from himself to Christ.
I am afraid that you both are still under this outward teaching only and that your acts of goodness are only done under obedience to rules, principles, precepts and doctrines and are not the fruit of a new-born spirit within you. But until you are renewed in the spirit of your minds, your virtues are only taught practices grafted upon a corrupt foundation. Everything you do will be a mixture of good and bad; your humility will awaken your pride, your charity will nourish your self love, and as your prayers increase, so will your opinion of your own goodness.
Until the heart is purified to the very bottom and has felt the ax at the root of its evil, (which cannot be done by outward instruction) everything that proceeds from it partakes of its own impurity and corruption.
It is clear that John is still under the law, or outward instruction. For in spite of his progress in the teaching on love he finds all the passions of his corrupt nature still alive in him and himself only changed in thoughts and opinions.
The same may be true of you, Mark. You consider yourself to be wholly possessed by the Spirit of Love simply because you have embraced it with open arms and think of nothing but living under the power of it. But if the Spirit of Love were truly alive in you, you would account for its birth and power in you in quite another manner. You would have known the price you paid for it and how many deaths you had suffered before the Spirit of Love came to life in you.
Mark - Your censure of us seems too severe to me. I would hope that you at least consider us to be born-again believers under something more than mere outward instruction. You know very well that it is a principle with both of us to expect all our goodness from the Spirit of God dwelling and working in us. We live in faith and hope of His divine operation.
Barnabas - Mark, I am not censuring you or accusing you. I really believe you are in a good place spiritually! It is good for John to feel that his natural man is not yet subdued. It is also good that you are delighted with the teaching on love. By these means both of you have been prepared for further advancement. Both of you thought you had as much of the Spirit of Love as you could have and therefore John wondered why he had no more benefit from it; and you wondered why I should desire to lead you further into it. Therefore I have desired this time with you to go over the practical matters of the Spirit so that neither of you will lose the benefit of what you have learned.
The Full Birth of the Spirit of Love
Mark - Please proceed. With all our heart we desire to have the truth and purity of this divine love brought forth in us and to be totally governed by it. I've come to the place where nothing holds any attraction for me except as it calls forth that spirit which does all that it does for God and man under the one law of love. Whatever you can say to me that will increase the power, expose the defects, or remove the obstacles to divine love in my soul, I will welcome.
Barnabas - Let me share with you the nature and power of this love in the soul of man. This divine love is perfect peace and joy; it is a sweet freedom from all anxiety; it is complete contentment and happiness in the midst of any and all circumstances and makes everything rejoice in itself. Love is the Christ of God; wherever it comes, it leads to true blessing and happiness. It comes as the restorer of every lost perfection, as a redeemer from all evil, a fulfiller of all righteousness, and a peace of God that is beyond our understanding.
Where this Spirit of Love reigns nothing is uneasy, unsatisfied or restless. Every hunger is fulfilled and all complaining, murmuring, accusing, and striving are suppressed and overcome.
The Spirit of Love cannot be disappointed, cannot complain, accuse, resent, or murmur because divine love desires nothing but itself; it is its own good, its own fulfillment, it has all when it has itself, because love is God and he who dwells in God dwells in love.
Are You Thus Blessed?
Barnabas - Tell me now, Mark, are you experiencing the fullness of the Spirit of Love?
Mark - Do you want me to tell you that I am an angel without the infirmities of flesh and blood?
Barnabas - No, but I would ask you to judge for yourself whether or not you are experiencing this love, not by any effort of your own but rather by the heavenly disposition that I have described to you. For to the extent that you are freed from all anxieties, trouble, and complainings, to that extent is the Spirit of Love come to life in you.
Divine love is a new life and a new nature. It introduces you into a new world; it puts an end to your former opinions, notions, and dispositions; it opens new emotions within you and makes you see things in a different light. That which was low is now high; and the high is now low; that which was wisdom is now foolishness, and foolishness is now wisdom; it makes prosperity and adversity, praise and censure to be equally nothing.

PART TWO
God is Light and Self is Darkness
John - I am fully convinced of what you say by my own uneasiness at finding that my natural tendencies are not yet overcome by this Spirit of Love. Evidently this uneasiness is aroused by the dawning of this divine love in me making just demands to be the one and only light, breath, and power of my life and to have all that is within me overcome and governed by it. I must either silence this small voice of newly risen love in me or have no rest from self condemnation till my whole nature is brought into subjection to it.
Barnabas - You are absolutely right, John, and this brings us to the one great practical point on which all our proficiency in the Spirit of Love depends, namely, that all that we are and all that we have from human nature must be given up, denied, and resisted if the full maturity of divine love is to be brought forth in us. We must realize that all that we are by nature is in full opposition to this divine love. Death to self is its only cure, and nothing else can make it subservient to good. Darkness cannot be altered or transformed into light but can only be subservient to the light by being lost in it and swallowed up by it.
Whatever is delightful, sublime, and glorious in spirits, minds or bodies, either in heaven or on earth is from the power of supernatural light, opening its endless wonders in them. Hell is full of misery because it has no communication with this light. Hell is the absence of this light.
Darkness and light are the two natures that are in every man and they do all that is done in him. The scriptures make only the one division: the works of darkness are sin and they who walk in the light are the children of God. Therefore light and darkness do everything that is done in man whether good or evil. Listen to what the Bible says: "For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness has shined in our hearts." "The god of this world has blinded the minds of them who believe not, that the light should not dawn upon them." "God is light and in Him is no darkness at all." "In Him was life and the life was the light of men." "He is the true light and He gives light to every man who comes into the world."
God can only be known as His light shines through and from those on whom He causes it to rest. The light of the glory of God is seen in the face of Jesus Christ and also in the faces and in the lives of His people.
The Power of Darkness
John - My heart is drawn to know and experience the power of the light as God would cause it to rest in its fullness upon me, but what is this darkness in itself and where is it?
Barnabas - The powers of darkness are the workings of nature or self, for nature, darkness, and self are three different expressions of the same thing. Every evil, wrathful, impure, thought, attitude, passion, or imagination that ever stirred within you; every misery, discontent, distress, rage, or torment that ever plagued the life of man, these are the powers or workings of darkness, nature, or self. Nothing is evil or wicked or tormenting but that which nature or self does.
John - But how can such a nature be brought forth by a God who is all goodness?
Barnabas - Nature, as it comes from God, could never have any quality of darkness in it if it had not lost that state of light in which it came forth from God. Evil, strife and self-will could never have had a place in all the universe if it had continued in the state in which it came forth from God. All that is called nature, darkness of self can be fully possessed by evil or fully possessed and motivated by good.
When we turn from God to self, we act unnaturally, we turn from all that makes nature to be good and find nature only as it is in itself . . . without God. It is then that nature or self is all evil and darkness. Nothing is to be found in it but the workings of every kind of evil, baseness, misery, torment and the utmost enmity to God and all goodness.
John - You have satisfied my question about the nature of self. I shall never forget it or ever have any doubt of its truth. I also see the truth of what you said about the nature and power of divine love. It is indeed perfect peace and joy, a freedom from all anxiety, making it possible to rejoice in all things. It is the Christ of God, and wherever it comes it brings blessing and happiness; it restores every lost perfection; it redeems from all evil; it fulfills all righteousness and brings a peace that passes all understanding.
I am a thousand times more thirsty now for the Spirit of Love. I am willing to sell all and buy it; its blessing is so great and the lack of it such a dreadful state that I am even afraid to lay down in my bed till every working power of my soul is fully given up to it and wholly possessed and governed by it.

PART THREE
Dying to Self to Live to God
Death to Self is Not by our Own Effort
John - I could almost say that you have shown me more than enough of this monster self, but tell me, what must I do to be saved from the mouth of this lion, for he is the depth of all subtlety, the Satan that deceives the whole world. He can hide himself under all forms of goodness. He can watch and fast, write and instruct, pray much and preach long, give to the poor, visit the sick, and yet often get more life and strength and gain a stronger position in these forms of virtue than he has in the vilest of sinners. Prescribe to me whatever you please. All rules, methods, and practices will be welcome if you judge them to be necessary in this matter.
Barnabas - There is no need of a number of practices or methods in this matter. For to die to self, or to come from under its power, cannot be done by any active resistance we can make to it by the powers of nature. For nature can no more overcome or suppress itself than wrath can heal wrath. So long as self acts, nothing but natural works are brought forth, and therefore the more labor of this kind, the more the self life is fed and strengthened with its own food.
But the one true way of dying to self is most simple and plain. There is no need of arts or methods; no cells, monasteries, or pilgrimages; it is equally accessible to everybody; it is always at hand; it meets you in everything; and is never without success.
If you ask what this one true, simple, plain, immediate, and unerring way is, it is the way of a patient, meek, humble resignation to God This is the way to die to self; it is nowhere else but in this state of heart.
John - The excellency and perfection of these virtues I readily acknowledge; but how will this prove the way of overcoming self to be so simple, plain, immediate, and unerring as you say? Is it not the teaching of almost all men and all books, and confirmed by our own sad experience, that a great deal of time, and effort and a variety of practices and methods are necessary, to the attainment of any one of these virtues?
Barnabas - When Christ was upon the earth, was there anything more simple, plain, immediate, unerring than the way to Him? Did scribes, Pharisees, publicans, and sinners need any length of time or exercise of rules and methods before they could have admission to Him or have the benefit of faith in Him?
John - I don't understand why you ask the question. How can it relate to the matter before us?
Barnabas - It not only relates to, but is the very heart of the matter. I refer you to a patient, meek, humble resignation to God as the one simple, plain, immediate, and unerring way of dying to self, I refer you to Christ Jesus the Lord. You can as easily and immediately, without art or method, by the mere turning to the Christ within you in simple faith, have all the benefit of these virtues, as publicans and sinners by their turning to Christ could be helped and saved by him when he walked among men.
John - You mean that simply by turning to Christ within is as certain and immediate a way of my being possessed and blessed by these virtues as when sinners turn to Christ to be helped and saved by Him?
Barnabas - Yes, I would have you strictly to believe this! And also to believe that the reasons why you are vainly seeking and never attaining these virtues is because you seek them in the wrong way; in a multitude of human rules, methods, and contrivances, and not in the simplicity of faith in which they who came to Christ immediately obtained that which they asked of Him.
"Come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." How short and simple and certain a way to peace and comfort from the misery and burden of sin! So what about all the rules and methods and round about ways to be delivered from the power of sin, and to find the redeeming power and virtue of Christ? Will you say that turning to Christ in faith was once indeed the way for men to enter into life and be delivered from the power of their sins, but that all this ended when Pilate nailed Jesus to the cross?
How strange to suppose that Christ, after having finished His great work, overcome death, ascended into heaven, with all power in heaven and on earth, has become less a savior than He was before! How could He bring less help to those who by faith turn to Him now than when He was clothed with the infirmity of our flesh and blood upon earth? Does He have less power after He has conquered than while He was only resisting and fighting with our enemies? Or does He have less good will to assist His Church, His own body, now that He is in heaven than He had to assist publicans and sinners before He was crucified? And yet this must be the case if our simple turning to Him in faith is not as sure a way of obtaining immediate assistance from Him now as when He was upon earth.
When Christ was upon earth nothing was more simple, plain, immediate, and certain than the way of coming to Him. There was no length of time, no rules or methods to be observed; all who came in the simplicity of a faith that knew it could not help itself, and turned from itself to Him, found immediate access and relief. And now that Christ is in heaven and has taken His place on the throne of grace, there has been no change in the way to come to Him; now that we cannot see Him, more than ever the way to Him and to be helped by Him is a way of faith. Faith in Him can bring an immediate and effectual deliverance from self.
He is able to deliver them who trust in Him from the dominion of self. His exaltation to the throne calls us to a confidence and assurance such as those who were with Him never could have had. Let your heart be strengthened with the faith that He who is mighty to save can save you from the dominion of self, and that faith in Him is the one simple, only and immediate way to obtain this deliverance.
But do not be mistaken as to how this deliverance comes. Many think that it comes by the death and entire removal of self. This is not the way. The death of self is something very different from the death to self which God's word holds out to you. When Jesus died to sin, He did not slay sin in the sense of annihilating it. Sin is still living and reigning in all who submit to it. He died to it so that it had no more power to tempt or persecute Him. You are partakers of His death to sin, and to self, in which sin works; and the healing he now gives is the power of His death to sin and His living unto God in such a way that He frees you from the dominion of self. Now you are living in Him and His life is released to flow out through you.
And now, you may have accepted this gift of deliverance but still feel the need to have opened up to you what it implies and how you can fully enjoy it. Or you may want more insight as to how you can more fully possess this blessing. The important thing is to turn at once, even this moment, to the Christ who dwells within you as the one and only most certain deliverer from the power of self and sin.
The Way of Dying to Self is the Very Perfection of Faith
John - It seems to me that you have stepped aside from the point. The question was not concerning turning to Christ in faith but whether my turning in faith and desire to patience, meekness, humility, and resignation to God would bring about the release and change as fully for me now as faith in Christ did for those who were his followers upon earth.
Barnabas - As a matter of fact, I have stuck closely to the point before us. Let's suppose I have given you a form of prayer in these words; "O Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world . . . " or, "O Bread that comes down from heaven . . . " Would you say that this was not a prayer to Christ because it did not call Him Jesus or the Son of God?
John - Yes, this is a prayer to Jesus, the Son of the living God! Who else but He is the Lamb of God and the bread that came down from heaven?
Barnabas - Well answered, my friend. When I exhort you to give up yourself in faith and hope to patience, meekness, humility, and surrender to God, I am pointing you directly to faith and hope in Jesus, the Lamb of God who is the perfection of patience, meekness, humility, and surrender to God!
Would you not say that a faith that makes you hunger and thirst for these virtues is a faith that makes you desire to be delivered from self by Jesus, the Lamb of God? So, therefore, every sincere desire, every inward inclination of your heart that presses after these virtues, and longs to be governed by them, is an immediate, direct appeal to Jesus, is worshiping and falling down before Him, is giving up yourself to Him, and is in itself the very perfection of faith in Him.
Hear the words of Christ Himself: "learn of me, for I am meek and lowly of heart; and you shall find rest unto your souls." It is clear that to desire patience, meekness, humility, and surrender to God is the same thing as to learn of Christ, or to have faith in Him. This is the one simple, short, and infallible way to overcome or be delivered from all the evil and burden of self expresses in these words, "And you shall find rest unto your souls."
This simple tendency or inclination of your heart to sink down into patience, meekness, humility, and surrender to God is truly dying to self. It is leaving all that you have to follow and be with Christ. It is your highest act of faith in Him. It is the most ardent and earnest declaration of your cleaving to Him with all your heart and seeking for no other salvation but from Him and in Him.
Therefore all the goodness, pardon and deliverance from sin that ever happened to anyone by looking to Christ is sure to be had from this state of heart which stands continually turned to Him in a desire to be governed by His spirit of patience, meekness, humility, and surrender to God.
O, John, if I could only help you to see what treasure there is in this state of heart, you would desire it with more eagerness than the thirsty deer desires the water-brooks. You would think of nothing, desire nothing but to constantly live in it. It is security from all evil and from all delusion. There is no problem or trial or temptation inside of you or in your circumstances that does not have its full remedy in this inward disposition of your heart. You have no questions to ask, no new way that you need to inquire after, for while you shut up yourself to a patient, meek, humble surrender to God, you are in the very arms of Christ, your whole heart is His dwelling place. He lives and works in you as certainly as He lived in and governed that body and soul which He took from the Virgin Mary.
Follow This Christ!
Learn what you will from men or from books, but without this you are only a poor wanderer in a barren wilderness. But where these virtues are found, there Christ sits enthroned in his own kingdom. From morning to night let this be the Christ that you follow. Then you will escape all the religious delusions that are in the world and all the delusions of your own heart.
When you seek patience, meekness, humility, and surrender to God you are truly coming to God through Christ. And when these virtues live and abide in you as the spirit and aim of your life, then Christ is in you and the life that you then lead is not yours but Christ's who lives in you.
This is what it means to follow Christ with all your power. You cannot make more haste after Him; you can have no other way of walking as He walked; no other way of being like Him, but by wholly giving up yourself to that which He was. For He was patience, meekness, humility, and total abandonment to the will of God.
Despairing of Self
Barnabas - To be angry at our own anger, to be ashamed of our own pride, and strongly resolve not to be weak, is only the beginning again of human endeavor; and that is rather the life of self than death to self. There is no help until we come to a total despair of all human help.
When a man is brought to such a full conviction as to have no more hope from all human means than he hopes to see with his hands or hear with his feet, then it is that he is truly prepared to die to self; that is, to give up all thoughts of having or doing anything that is good in any other way but that of presenting a meek, humble, patient, surrender of himself to God.
All that we do before this is done in ignorance and is full of weakness and impurity. Let our zeal be ever so wonderful, yet if it begins sooner, or proceeds farther, or to any other matter or in any other way than as it is led and guided by this conviction, it is full of delusion. No repentance, however long or laborious, has any value till it falls into this state. For God must do all, or all is nothing. But God cannot do all till all is expected of Him. And all is not expected from Him till, by a despair of every human help, we have no hope, or trust, or longing after anything but a patient, meek, humble, and total surrender to God.
The State of the Heart
And now, my dear friends, I have brought you to the very place for which I desired this days conversation which was to set your feet upon sure ground with regard to the Spirit of Love. For all the different matters we have discussed have been only a variety of proofs that the Spirit of divine love can have no possibility of birth in any man till he wills and chooses to be dead to self in a patient, meek, humble surrender to God.
It is from this state of heart also that the spirit of prayer is born which is the desire of the soul turned to God. Be steadfast in this! Let nothing else enter your mind; have no other plan but to nourish and keep up this state of heart. Then your house is built upon a rock; the light of heaven and the love of God will begin their work in you, will bless and sanctify every power of your being. You will be in a readiness for every kind of virtue and good work, and will know what it is to be led by the Spirit of God.
John - I am receiving all you are saying and I am excited! But, suppose I should find myself so overcome with my own darkness and selfish attitudes that I am not able to sink from them into a true consciousness of this full surrender to God? What must I do then?
Barnabas - You are then at the very time and place of practicing it with the greatest advantage to yourself. For though this patient, meek surrender is to be exercised with regard to all outward things, it mainly deals with our inward disposition, such as our troubles, perplexities, weaknesses, doubts, fears, and failures. To stand firmly committed to a patient, meek, humble, surrender to God when your own impatience, anger, pride, and self will attack you is a higher and more beneficial performance of this duty than when you are attacked by the pride or anger of other people.
I use the words, "stand firmly committed" because this is our true performance of this duty at the time of the test. You may have no inward assurance that you are performing it well, but if you seek help in no other way, but wholly give yourself to be helped by the mercy of God, then, no matter what the state of your heart may be, you will have the full benefit of God's mercy and grace.
The greater the perplexity of your distress the nearer you are to the greatest and best relief, provided you have the faith to expect it all from God. For nothing brings you so near to divine relief as the extremity of distress.
The Divine Operation
Barnabas - God has no greater name than "the helper of all who look to Him for help." Nothing can hinder your finding this goodness of God and every other gift and grace that you need. Nothing can hinder or delay it except your turning away from the only fountain of living water to some cracked cistern of your own making, to some other method , expecting a deliverance through some other means than that which is only to be had from worshiping the Father in spirit and truth. And this is what you are doing when you trust wholly in the operation of God within you. We have neither more nor less of this divine operation within us because of this or that outward form or discipline. It is strictly to the degree that our faith and hope are fixed upon God alone.
Our Heart The Way To God
Barnabas - The way to God is through our heart. And even our heart cannot find Him except by its faith in Him; a faith that looks only to God to meet every need at all times and in all circumstances. This is the very essence of our salvation. It is in the heart of man where true religion is found; a salvation that makes a true and full offering of our whole being to God's work within us. This is the true confession that we are worshiping our Lord Jesus Christ who is the only true God. Your foundation stands sure while you look to Him for your deliverance and to no other. As you look to Him, the Father is working life in your soul by His Word and by His Spirit.
PART FOUR
The Lamb of God Breathing His Nature Into Us
John - I can never thank you enough, Barnabas, for this good teaching! Now I know how to find full relief in this humble, meek, patient, surrender of my self to God. As you said, it is a remedy that is always at hand, equally practicable at all times and never in greater reality than when my own temper is making war against it in my own heart.
You have surely carried your point with me that the God of patience, meekness, and love is the one God of my heart. It is now the whole desire of my soul to seek for all my salvation in and through the merits and mediation of the meek, humble, patient, resigned, suffering Lamb of God who alone has the power to bring forth the birth of these heavenly virtues in my soul.
He is the bread of God that came down from heaven. Jesus is the eternal love and meekness that left the bosom of the Father to be himself the resurrection of meekness and love in all the darkened, angry souls of fallen men. What a comfort to know that this Lamb of God who is the glory of heaven and the joy of angels, is as near to us, as truly in the midst of us, as He is in the midst of heaven! And that not a thought, look, or desire of our heart that presses toward Him, longing to catch one small spark of His heavenly nature, but will as surely find Him, touch Him, and draw virtue from Him as the woman who was healed by touching the hem of His garment!
This teaching makes me feel so ashamed of all my natural outbursts. Every whisper of my soul that stirs up impatience, resentment, pride, and anger within me shall be rejected. Now I can see that the best of all prayers and the surest of all means to have nothing but Christ living and working in me as the Lamb of God that takes away every sin that ever had power over me, is to give up all resentment and sink down into humility and meekness under all adversity, contradiction and injustice, and turn the other cheek.
Oh, sweet surrender of myself to God! Happy death to every selfish desire! Blessed unction of a holy life that drives all evil out of my soul! Be my guide and governor wherever I go! Nothing else can take me from myself, nothing else can lead me to God; hell has no power where you are in control. May I never have a thought, bring forth a word, or do anything for myself or others but under the influence of this blessed inspiration.
Please forgive me, Barnabas, for this emotional outburst. I feel that I cannot help myself. The very sight of this heavenly land, this Sabbath of the soul, is overwhelming. To be freed from the miserable labor of self, to rest in meekness, humility, patience, and surrender to the Spirit of God, is like the joyful voice of the Bridegroom to my soul and leaves no wish in me but to be at the marriage feast of the Lamb.
The Marriage of the Lamb
Barnabas - And you will certainly come to this feast, John, if you keep to the path of meekness, humility, and patience, under a full surrender to God. But if you go aside from it, it is only preparing for yourself a harder death. For you must die to everything that you have accomplished under any other spirit than that of meekness, humility, and true resignation to God. Everything else has its rise from the fire of nature; it belongs to nothing else and must be given up. These virtues are the wedding garments; they are the lamps and vessels well furnished with oil. Nothing will replace them; they must have their own full and perfect work in you or you cannot enter into the highest possible union between God and the soul in this life.
Barnabas - Need I say more, John, to show you how to come into the sweet peace and joy of the Spirit of Love? Neither notions, nor speculations, nor heat, nor fervor, nor rules, nor methods can bring it forth. It is the child of light, and cannot possibly have any birth in you but only from the light of God rising in your soul.
But the light of God cannot arise or be found in you by any effort or contrivance of your own, but only in the way of meekness, humility, and patience, which waits, trusts, surrenders to, and expects all from the life-giving operation of God within you; creating, quickening and reviving in your spirit, that birth, and image, and likeness of Jesus in which the first father of mankind was created.
John - You need say no more, Barnabas. You have not only removed the difficulties that brought us together but have, by your clear teaching, fixed and confirmed us in a full belief of the wonderful truth that there is but one salvation for all mankind, and that is the life of God in the soul. God is one, human nature is one, salvation is one, and the way to it is one, and that is the desire of the soul turned to God through faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, dear Barnabas, good-bye. If we see you no more in this life, you have sufficiently taught us how to seek and find every kind of goodness, blessing, and happiness in God alone.

APPENDIX A
The Exchanged Life
A letter from Hudson Taylor to his sister, Amelia., October, 1869
(used by permission of OMF International)
My own dear sister - So many thanks for your long dear letter . . . I do not think you have written me such a letter since we have been in China. I know it is with you as with me - you cannot, not you will not. Mind and body will not bear more than a certain amount of strain, or do more than a certain amount of work.
As to work, mine was never so plentiful, so responsible, or so difficult; but the weight and strain are all gone. The last month or more has been, perhaps, the happiest of my life; and I long to tell you a little of what the Lord has done for my soul.
I do not know how far I may be able to make myself intelligible about it, for there is nothing new or strange or wonderful - and yet, all is new! In a word: "Whereas I was blind, now I see."
Perhaps I shall make myself more clear if I go back a little. Well, Dearie, my mind has been greatly exercised for the past six or eight months, feeling the need personally, and for our Mission, of more holiness, life and power in our souls. But personal need stood first and was the greatest. I felt the ingratitude, the danger, the sin of not living nearer to God. I prayed, agonized, fasted, strove, made resolutions, read the Word more diligently, sought more time for retirement and meditation - but all was without avail. Every day, almost every hour, the consciousness of sin oppressed me.
I knew that if I could only abide in Christ all would be well, but I could not. I would begin the day with prayer, determined not to take my eye from Him for a moment, but pressure of duties, sometimes very trying, constant interruptions, often very wearing, would cause me to forget Him. Then one´s nerves get so fretted in this climate that temptations to irritability, hard thoughts and sometimes unkind words are all the more difficult to control. Each day brought its register of sin, failure, and lack of power. To will was indeed present with me, but how to perform, I found not.
Then came the question, "Is there no rescue? Must it be like this till the end - constant conflict and, instead of victory, too often defeat?" How, too, could I preach with sincerity that to those who receive Jesus, "to them gave He power to become the sons of God, " (i.e. God-like) when it was not so in my experience? Instead of growing stronger, I seemed to be getting weaker and to have less power against sin; and no wonder, for faith and even hope were getting very low. I hated myself; I hated my sin; and yet I gained no strength against it.
I felt I was a child of God; His Spirit in my heart would cry, in spite of all, "Abba, Father", but to rise to my privileges as a child, I was utterly powerless. I thought that holiness was to be gradually attained by a diligent use of the means of grace. I felt that there was nothing I so much desired in this world, nothing I so much needed. But the more I pursued and strove after holiness, the more it eluded my grasp, till hope itself almost died out, and I began to think that perhaps to make heaven the sweeter, God would not give it to us in this life.
I do not think I was striving to attain it in my own strength. I knew I was powerless. I told the Lord so, and asked Him to give me help and strength and sometimes I almost believed He would keep and uphold me. But on looking back in the evening, there was sin and failure to confess and mourn before God.
I would not give you the impression that this was the daily experience of all those long, weary months, but it tended to be a too frequent state of soul and I almost ended up in despair. And yet, never did Christ seem more precious a Savior who could and would save such a sinner! And sometimes there were seasons not only of peace but of joy in the Lord. But they were fleeting and at best there was a sad lack of power. Oh, how good the Lord has been in bringing this conflict to an end!
All the time I felt assured that there was in Christ all I needed, but the practical question was how to get it out. He was rich, but I was poor; He was strong, but I was weak. I knew full well that there was in the vine, in the root, the stem, abundant fatness; but how to get it into my puny little branch was the question.
As gradually the light dawned on me, I saw that faith was the only prerequisite to laying hold of His fullness and making it my own. But I had not this faith . . . I strove for it, but it would not come; I tried to exercise it, but in vain. Seeing more and more the wondrous supply of grace laid up in Jesus, the fullness of our precious Savior - my helplessness and guilt seemed to increase. Sins committed appeared but as trifles compared with the sin of unbelief which was their cause, which could not or would not take God at His word, but rather made Him a liar! Unbelief was, I felt, the damning sin of the world - yet I indulged in it. I prayed for faith but it did not come. What was I to do?
When my agony of soul was at its height, a sentence in a letter from dear McCarthy was used to remove the scales from my eyes, and the Spirit of God revealed the truth of our oneness with Jesus as I had never seen it before. McCarthy, who had been much exercised by the same sense of failure, but saw the light before I did, wrote (I quote from memory): "But how to get faith strengthened? Not by striving after faith, but by resting on the Faithful One."
As I read I saw it all! "If we believe not, He remains faithful." I looked to Jesus and saw (and when I saw, oh, how joy flowed) that He had said, "I will never leave you." "Ah, here is rest!" I thought. "I have striven in vain to rest in Him. I´ll strive no more. For has He not promised to abide with me - never to leave me, never to fail me?" And Dearie, He never will!
But this was not all He showed me, nor one half. As I thought of the vine and the branches, what light the blessed Spirit poured directly into my soul! How great seemed my mistake in having wished to get the sap, the fullness, out of Him. I saw not only that Jesus would never leave me, but that I was a member of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. The vine now I see is not the root merely, but all - root, stem, branches, twigs, leaves, flowers, fruit; and Jesus is not only that; He is soil and sunshine, air and showers, and ten thousand times more than we have ever dreamed, wished for, or needed. Oh the joy of seeing this truth! I do pray that the eyes of your understanding may be enlightened, that you may know and enjoy the riches freely given us in Christ.
Oh, my dear sister, it is a wonderful thing to be really one with a risen and exalted Savior, to be a member of Christ! Think what it involves. Can Christ be rich and I poor? Can your right hand be rich and the left poor? Or your head be well fed while your body starves? Again, think of this bearing on prayer. Could a bank clerk say to a customer, "It was only your hand that wrote that check, not you," or "I cannot pay this sum to your hand, but only to yourself?" No more can your prayers, or mine, be discredited if offered in the name of Jesus (i.e. not in your own name, or even for the sake of Jesus, but on the ground that we are His, His members) so long as we keep within the extent of Christ´s credit - a considerably wide limit!
If we ask anything unscriptural or not in accordance with the will of God, Christ Himself could not do that; but "If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us; and . . . we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him."
The sweetest part, if one may speak of one part being sweeter than another, is the rest which full identification with Christ brings. I am no longer anxious about anything, as I realize this; for He, I know, is able to carry out His will, and His will is mine. It makes no difference where He places me, or how. That is rather for Him to consider than for me; for in the easiest positions He must give me His grace, and in the most difficult His grace is sufficient.
It matters little to my servant whether I send him to buy a few dollars worth of things or the most expensive articles. In either case he looks to me for the money and brings me his purchases. So if God places me in great perplexity, must He not give me much guidance; or in positions of great difficulty, much grace; or in circumstances of great pressure and trial, much strength? There is no fear that His resources will be unequal to the emergency! And His resources are mine for He is mine, and is with me and dwells in me.
All this springs from the believers oneness with Christ. And since Christ is now living in my heart by faith, how happy I have been! I wish I could tell you instead of writing about it.
I am no better than before (in one sense, I do not wish to be, nor am I striving to be); but I am dead and buried with Christ - yes, and risen too and ascended; and now Christ lives in me, and "the life that I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
I now believe that I am dead to sin. God reckons me so, and tells me to reckon myself so. He knows best. All my past experiences may have shown that it was not so; but I dare not say it is not, when He says it is. I feel and know that old things have passed away. I am as capable of sinning as ever, but Christ is realized as present as never before. He cannot sin; and He can keep me from sinning.
I am sorry to have to confess it, but I cannot say that since I have seen this light I have not sinned; but I do feel there was no need to have done so. And further - walking more in the light, my conscience has been more tender; sin has been instantly seen, confessed, pardoned; and peace and joy (with humility) instantly restored; with one exception, when for several hours peace and joy did not return - from lack, as I had to learn, of full confession, and from some attempt to justify self.
Faith, I now see, is "the substance of things hoped for" and not mere shadow. It is not less than sight, but more. Sight only shows the outward forms of things; faith gives the substance. You can rest on substance; you can feed on substance. Christ dwelling in the heart by faith (i.e. faith in His word of promise) is power indeed, is life indeed. And Christ and sin will not dwell together; nor can we experience His presence with love of the world or carefulness about "many things."
And now I must close. I have not said half I would like to say if I had more time. May God give you the grace to lay hold on these blessed truths. Do not let us continue to say, in effect, "Who shall ascend into heaven? that is, to bring Christ down from above." In other words, do not let us consider Him as far off when God has made us one with Him, members of His very body.
Nor should we look upon this experience, these truths, as only for the few. They are the birthright of every child of God, and no one can dispense with them without dishonor to our Lord. The only power for deliverance from sin or for serving the Lord is Christ.
Your own affectionate brother,
J. HUDSON TAYLOR

AFTERWORD
The teaching you have just read is the heart and center of the message of Jesus Christ. It is the New Covenant in his blood. "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior." (Titus 3:4-6)
There is no other way to become a Christian than through the mercy of God to those who turn from self to seek forgiveness for sins that are past. There is also no way to find freedom from the bondage of besetting sins after we are born again than to turn to God and away from all our efforts to conquer sin. That is the moment we find that it is through faith in the indwelling Christ that gives us the victory.
Read this message over and over and over till you begin to experience the change coming into your life. It will probably not come like an explosion, but more like the yeast that slowly and quietly leavens the entire loaf of bread.
If you can get hold of this message by William Law, all else will fall into place in your walk with the Lord. This is the message of the saints down through the ages on how to live the overcoming life. You will find it confirmed over and over in books such as the following: THE LIFE OF JEANE GUYON, HUDSON TAYLOR'S SPIRITUAL SECRET, THE NORMAL CHRISTIAN LIFE, THE CHRISTIAN'S SECRET OF A HAPPY LIFE, THE SAVING LIFE OF CHRIST, MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST, and many others.
Add to the above the witnesses the words of Andrew Murray, whose witness we find in the introduction to this booklet and it should convince us that this message is from God.
May God bless your life through the ministry of this little book.

A MESSAGE FROM ROBERT FITTS SR

Don't Give Up
Have you felt like giving up lately? Has God placed you in a hard place and given you promises that have not yet been fulfilled? Have you been wondering if you heard correctly when you stepped into your present situation? God has a word for you.
"Have I not said unto you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God? You have obeyed my voice and have set yourself to do all my will. I see and I will honor your obedience. Only be not weary in well doing for IN DUE SEASON you shall reap if you faint not.
I know that you have not walked a perfect walk before me, but you are under a BLOOD COVENANT and all your sins are forgiven for Jesus sake. "Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin." I have given to you the sure mercies of David and though I may visit you with the rod, yet I will not remove my mercies from you, for I correct and I discipline the one in whom my soul delights.
Therefore let not your heart be discouraged, but lift up the hands that hang down and give high praise to the Lord your God who has called you and anointed you to be a blessing RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE, RIGHT NOW. Think not that your happiness and fulfillment will come to you at another time and in another place. You are AT THIS MOMENT in the right place to experience fullness of joy. I AM YOUR JOY AND HAPPINESS! No created thing or circumstance has power to bring you into peace and rest. I AM YOUR DWELLING PLACE. As you rest in me, I am at work in you, around you, for you and through you." says the Lord your God.

HIS SIGNIFCANCE

His Signifcance
by Barbara Jacobs Email: tacomatabernacle@gmail.com

We as believers generally acknowledge that God is the giver of dreams and visions. In this context I am referring to visions for ministries. We can also call them ideas. God is the One who inspires us with vision. He inspires us with ideas for outreach, for bringing hope and deliverance, for bringing the kingdom of Heaven into our earthly realm. At times we may claim to have a “mandate” from God, or an idea that will revolutionize our cities. God does indeed give dreams and visions and inspires us with ideas regarding how to win the lost and make disciples. He has been trying to bring man into right relationship with Him since the fall, and He will continue to do so until the end is at hand.
The problem arises when we who are carriers of a vision allow our flesh to step in. We can know that our flesh has stepped into God’s vision when we take ownership of the vision. In other words, when the mandate from God becomes our mandate. When we get defensive when “our” vision is attacked or questioned. Jesus told His disciples to go into all of the world preaching the gospel and making disciples of all nations. That is and always will be the mandate from God. When we take credit for or try to market a way to bring about a vision, we get our dirty fingerprints all over it and the “mandate” from God often becomes a personal grasp for glory.
When we find ourselves getting defensive when others don’t see the vision as we see it, we have allowed our flesh to creep in as though everyone must be in complete agreement with the way that we go about accomplishing the furthering of the Kingdom. Denominations have been born and died based upon these premises. Division and factions creep in and lack of unity is the result. Ministries rise and fall due to our tendency to take ownership of something that never belonged to us in the first place. Our fleshly need for significance is always taking over.
This is how “Christian celebrities” (an oxymoron if ever there was one) have come into existence. The need for significance, the need for a “king” to rule over us, neither of which is a new thing.
The Israelites had the perfect set-up. They took their orders right from God himself, first through Moses then the prophets. All of whom, by the way, were more feared by the people than held in a place of high regard. What did the Israelites do? They cried out for a king so that they could be like the other nations. Well, you may argue, we have cried out for no king; and in a literal sense this is true, but we in the west have tried to emulate the society we live in by setting up “Christian Celebrities.” Most of these “celebrities” start out somewhat like would-be actors and actresses. They wait tables: they feed the hungry, they take care of widows and orphans. They are with the “little people,” otherwise known as the “least of these.” The problem comes in when someone sees what a great thing these people are doing. They start to get accolades and praise.
Initially these bondservants admit that it is only the grace of God that has allowed them to serve in this manner. At some undetermined point however, instead of deferring the praise to the One to Whom it should go, they start to believe that it is due to some ability or goodness within themselves that the honor is being bestowed. Again, the fleshly need for significance arises.
Paul said in the book of Galatians 2:20: “ I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” The apostle Paul declared that he died daily. Jesus himself told us in Luke 9 that if we desire to come after Him we must deny ourselves and take up His cross daily and follow him. That should be our mantra. Too often, however, what we see is a body that refuses to die. We refuse to let Christ alone receive the glory and honor.
Our old nature is never so evident as when “our” vision or ministry becomes something we must fight our brothers and sisters in Christ over. When we jockey for position and notoriety we look just like the world. Flesh, flesh, flesh. Essentially we fall into the same trap as James and John when their mother stepped in and tried to arrange the pecking order in heaven. She requested that one son sit on God’s right, and the other on His left. The newborn church had another problem with the same root: Some claiming to be of Apollos, some of Paul. Notoriety and factions; aligning oneself with the most powerful person; the need to be seen and have significance in the eyes of the world. These are extremely fleshly symptoms to be avoided by followers of Christ.
If we are truly “of Christ” our significance is of no value. We are in Him. All glory is deferred to Him. We are as the moon; an object designed to reflect the glory of the sun (son,) to light the way for others. We are in a dangerous place when we begin to see our mandate as the mandate. When we require our name to be put to a vision, idea, or ministry-which is from God- we usurp, as it were, the very giver of the vision.
On a trip to Africa I noticed something quite refreshing. Many Christian businesses had names that gave glory to God rather than the business owner: King of Kings Hair Salon or Glory to God Café, among others of the same nature. We may find those to be rather quaint and unsophisticated, but I have no doubt that it pleases the One to whom the business has been dedicated.
In our search for significance, we so often overlook the fact that the One who has all significance, the One who is supposedly our all in all; His is the name which should be on everything we do. His fingerprint should be the identifying mark, His signature on every dotted line. Our identity should disappear into His identity. Our “defense” of our ministry or idea should not exist. God can defend His ministries and ideas. God uses many people to bring about His plans and purposes, but He uses the seemingly insignificant ones. He uses the foolish ones. The ones who realize that “without Him we can do nothing.”
The problem arises when those He chooses begin to take His significance as their own. Soon we no longer take correction; we begin to think that “our” ministry will fail if we step down. We have set ourselves up as the ones who keep the ministry going. We forget that it is God who birthed the vision and God who put the words and ideas in our mouths.
We need to be wary, and take a lesson from King Herod in the book of Acts. The people were so in awe of His speaking ability they cried out, “the voice of a god and not a man.’” God took care of him immediately. He was eaten with worms and died. May we all, those who are in ministry and those we minister to, learn from this and defer all glory and honor to God alone.

I CAN OF MINE OWN SELF DO NATHING!

I Can of Mine Own Self do Nothing!
by Arthur Burt www.arthurburt.com

Divine purpose

Divine purpose is using ordinary people who recognize they are ordinary and will not seek to be extraordinary. Man fails by aiming to be what he's not. He can only be effective in his function. And he will discover his function by the unction on his function.
In other words, the will of God works. But the will of God is meant to work perfectly with ordinary people who realize they are ordinary and, as such, will not move out of order.
All our troubles come in exalting ourselves. We trespass out of our function and aim to be what we could never be, because God never meant us to have any function outside of what He gives us. Selah!
One Head is the Head. The Head of the Body is our Lord Jesus. Amazingly, He declares, "I can of mine own self do nothing." (John 5:30) I am being compelled by circumstances all my life to believe this.
I don't believe it, therefore, I have to prove it. I arrive helpless, useless, like a car with a flat battery. I've tried pushing, I've tried pulling, I've almost ruptured myself, but I can't start it.
Ah! Here comes somebody. I've flagged them down.
"Could you help me please?"
"Of course I can."
And this person puts jumper cables on my flat battery, positive to positive and negative to negative. The Son of God becomes the Son of Man.
The negative is vital

That's the whole purpose! I need to be positive about the fact that I am negative.
Now that is the revelation of God. God is positive for the negative.
Do you see your calling? God has chosen you!
You don't have to be something you're not. You simply have to have the truth of what you really are!
You're ordinary. You are very ordinary.
When I cease trying to be something I'm not, then God comes into my life.
Now the power is throbbing through my poor flat battery! Now my life is throbbing with power! How? I look to this Person. He takes the jumper cables off; He puts them away.
I say, "Thank you! Oh, thank you, Sir, so much! What is your name?"
He says, "Oh, my name? It's Jumping Jesus."
"Jumping Jesus?"
"Yes!"
"Oh, how wonderful! Well thank You for giving me a jump!"
He says, "You don't understand, do you?"
"Well tell me."
He explains, "My cables don't start in me. Just as I connected you to My cables, My cables at the other end were connected to My Father. Don't you see that?
When you become positive with your negative, then you'll find the power will flow.

Take My jumper cables, take my yoke and learn of Me. (Matt. 11:29)
Do you see it? I am like you, a flat battery. I can of My own self do nothing! It's the Father that's in Me, He doeth the works. (John 5:30)
But He only does those works because I am connected to My Father. I am totally helpless of Myself, but I am perfectly fulfilled in being plugged in or connected to My Father. He does the works in Me.
Now understand this! Come here! Let Me talk to you."
"All I ever did, I never did. (John 5:30) All I did, I didn't! I did not do what I did do. Do you understand this? I am a fl at battery connected to a throbbing Father by jumper cables. Do you see that?
Only when you are positive with the negative will anything positive ever come out of you. You've looked in the wrong place and you've not had the truth. You are bankrupt! You are a failure! You cannot do anything!"
"Why should you think you are better than Me, the Son of God? If I can do nothing of Myself, (John 5:30) who are you to think you could do something of yourself? Th is is the root cause of all your failures.
Like it or not, you think you're better than I am! You're not! You're not! Don't you see, smoldering inside you is a volcano ready to erupt at any given moment.
How do you erupt? In your judgment of other people, all of a sudden you erupt when you meet another individual
Now the next thing is the uncomely member (Ì Cor. 12:23) in the Body. Is there such a thing? I know the scripture declares it. But maybe God is looking through the window of my attitude toward another person.
In terming someone else uncomely, have I not seen I'm revealing what I believe about myself? I declare your ruler isn't straight and put my crooked ruler against your ruler.
What's revealed? It's my ruler that isn't straight!
Romans says, "Thou that judges doest the same things." (Rom. 2:1) Things that irritate me are the things I am guilty of. Thou that judges doest... I'll either believe it or I'll prove it.
So now, I judge. In the Body, there are uncomely members. Some members in the Body are so uncomely in our estimation, we do not even like to talk about them. But how did you get into the world? Did you grow on a gooseberry bush? Or did your father and mother rub noses?
Well you know the answer to that. We are very, very ordinary people and we need to adjust to God's standards instead of ours. There are no uncomely members in the Body except one and that is me. I am ordinary.
But when I embrace the truth of this, I see that God has put more abundant honor on the uncomely member. This is where God's glory is safe.
We have this treasure in earthen vessels. God deposits in somebody who is so totally unattractive. They are like the little black box that holds the pearl in the shop window.
Nobody considers it beautiful or attractive. Nor does it distract. It's a background for the glory of the pearl. No one notices the box, their eye is on the pearl.
There is only One who is wonderful and his name is Jesus!
No one sees the clean window, they see the magnificent view through the window. What a wonderful thing when people will not see me, but will see through me and see God. To see through you and see the altogether lovely One!
What a triumph of grace when others will not see the earthen vessel, but the glory it contains, the altogether lovely One. This is the purpose and the plan of God.

TENACITY IN PRAYER

Tenacity in Prayer
By Alice Smith

"And He also spoke a parable to them to teach it is always right to pray,
and not to faint" (Luke 18:1).

I grew up along the Gulf Coast of Texas and have always loved to fish. So several years ago, when our family went on vacation to Puerto Vallerta, Mexico, one of my expectations was to go deep-sea fishing. Eddie arranged the deal with two Hispanic men on their well-equipped private boat.

The next morning, very early, we arrived at the boat dock. As we stepped onto the boat, Eddie pointed out to me how expensive the rods and reels were. Since we would be fishing for sailfish or marlin, the rigs we used cost from $800 to $1,000 each. I was so nervous about losing the rig that my knuckles turned white as I held on tightly to the rod.

Soon,  however, the boat ride began to relax me. With the rhythm of the boat over the waves, I started to get sleepy. Twenty minutes later we arrived at just the right spot to fish. The captain told us we needed live bait, of which Eddie accommodated us by immediately catching several small tuna--perfect bait for big fish.

Two hours passed. We had paid for four hours, and now half of our time was gone. Except for Eddie's 6-inch tuna, we had caught nothing. I was beginning to worry. So I decided to pray. Jesus tells us to pray about everything, and I really wanted to catch a trophy-size fish. I told the captain and his friend that I was going to pray to Jesus that I would catch a big fish. He and his co-mate looked at me with disbelief. Hey, the world desperately needs to see non-religious attitudes among Christians, so I began to speak
with my eyes open and said, "Lord Jesus, you own all the fish in this huge ocean. I am asking you right now to let me catch a very big one. Thank you for hearing my prayer. Amen." It was humorous, because the men had removed their caps and bowed their heads. At the end of my prayer they repeated "amen" after me.

Less than three minutes later, a gorgeous sailfish leaped out of the water. His snout was long and slender, his fins fully extended. The beautiful blue fish struggled to free himself from my line. I was ecstatic! This sailfish was on my line and now I was in the fight to bring him in. Neither Eddie nor the men helped me with the line. But they carefully instructed me on how to reel the fish in. As soon as I engaged the fish in the fight, other party boats began to circle ours. I could almost feel the spite of the professional fishermen as they watched me from afar. (Smile.)

I screamed almost the entire 35 minutes it to took to tire the fish! The strength of that sailfish was tremendous--and indescribable. Two times I reeled the fish to the boat only to have it gain new energy and run. It was so difficult to release the line and allow the fish to run, for I knew it was going to require more tenacity and determination on my part to reel him in again. But I was determined to win the battle and land this fish. Finally, the fish tired. The third time I pulled the fish near the boat, it was too exhausted to resist. The fish was mine! We pulled this beauty into the boat—all 80 pounds of it and 8 feet, 1 inch long. Perhaps you're wondering why I'm telling you this fish story. Is it because I want to brag a little? Well, maybe. But there is another reason.

While I struggled with my line, I had seriously questioned my ability to catch the fish. Doubt flooded my mind. I was tired and thirsty. My arms ached. The strength of the fish was intense. People all around me were watching to see if I would stick with the fight. Although I had prayed to Jesus for this blessing, now my faith was being tested. Intercessory prayer is not unlike what I went through to catch that sailfish.

God gives us a burden. The load is heavy and the struggle is intense. It may be about your wayward child. Just like that fish, one minute your child appears to be repenting and then off he or she runs. You pray even more. You ask the Lord to answer your prayer and He has put you in the fight of your life. Jesus told us, "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force" (Matt. 11:12).

Effective, prevailing prayer can require extreme effort. It is a fight, a spiritual violence that has you hanging on to the promises of God with white-knuckle intensity. Your child is running from God and doesn't want anything to do with Him. Just hang on to the rig! Don't let go. You might even see a small breakthrough; but until your child is in the boat of salvation and victory, you must remain engaged in the battle. It requires tenacity, determination, faith, and confidence in God and His Word to get the big fish into the boat.

This story applies to someone you know--a friend, a husband, a child, a parent. Keep fishing. Don't give up! Pray! Hang on to God's promises and some day you will land the big one!
